As the newly appointed CEO of AWS, Matt Garman steps into his role with a wealth of experience and a vision for the future. With his leadership, there's a sense of anticipation in the air, a feeling that change is on the horizon, bringing with it both challenges and opportunities. One area where we might see shifts is in the focus on new markets. Matt's strategic mindset and growth focus could lead to prioritising expanding AWS's reach into untapped territories or emerging industry segments. This could mean increased marketing efforts, targeted product development initiatives, or even strategic acquisitions to bolster AWS's presence in key sectors. That approach can be balanced with his product quality excellence, which could translate into focusing on growing the current market through innovative and improved services.  Moreover, Matt's reputation for fostering collaboration and teamwork could herald a new era of synergy within AWS. Breaking down silos and encouraging cross-functional innovation could become the norm, driving us to new heights of creativity and efficiency. Matt has already announced that he will make some organisational adjustments. Will it be with this intention? Efficiency, too, might become a hallmark of Matt's leadership. While AWS is already renowned for its operational excellence, Matt's keen eye for optimisation could further streamline internal processes and resource allocation, ensuring that AWS continuously operates at peak performance. Under Matt's guidance, we may see an evolution in service offerings. With his finger on the pulse of emerging technologies, Garman could steer AWS towards new frontiers such as edge computing, quantum computing, or AI-powered solutions, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of innovation. Also, let's remember the importance of clear communication. Matt's emphasis on transparency and openness could lead to a new era of customer engagement, with more transparent communication around product roadmaps and development plans fostering more robust relationships with valued customers and partners. But among all these changes, some things will likely remain the same. AWS's unwavering commitment to customer centricity, for instance, is a cornerstone of AWS's success and is unlikely to waver under Garman's leadership. Similarly, dedication to continuous innovation and a long-term vision for sustainable growth are values that will endure, driving us forward into the future. Of course, there are uncertainties, too. Matt has not yet revealed the specifics of his growth strategies, and we are yet to see the impact of his leadership style on existing teams within AWS. This one initially caught me by surprise as it seemed he was just getting started. But as it turned out, Selipsky viewed his role as strictly transitional, for preparing the next generation of AWS leaders. Nonetheless, the lens to view this is that, while the carbon-sucking demands of #genAI threaten to upend the industry, AWS business is showing early signs of plateauing. It's no longer the days of (to paraphrase) you don't get fired for buying AWS. We don't think this means "Day 2" in Amazon parlance, but as we recently noted, AWS needs to realize it is a new day. It's graduated the hypergrowth startup phase and now it needs to overcome its product silos. AWS's huge all you can eat menu of cloud services has to get rationalized, bundled, and simplified if it's going to grab a bigger chunk of IT. Because, despite the hype, at most organizations computing is still majority on-premises, and getting that last mile is always going to be the hardest. That will be Matt Garman's challenge.

I left Amazon Web Services (AWS) today. When I joined the company in 2014, I could not have predicted it would become my home for the next decade of my life. Tim Wagner bringing me in to be the PM on the future Lambda was (and will forever be) a literal life changing moment to me. Since then it has been one fascinating new challenge after another. From establishing the #serverless concept with Tim Wagner and Marco Argenti to growing the #serverless business with David Richardson , Deepak Singh, and Holly Mesrobian, I’ve never really had to (or had the time to!) stop and think “what’s next?” because the answer was always “this”. It took 10 years for that answer to change. How do you measure a decade? (No, this isn’t a segue into a Rent parody). For me - it’s in lessons - across product management, large scale system design, customer focus, sustainable growth, and in the last few years, running efficient technology teams. Very few companies can train you the way Amazon can, and has the breadth of people you can learn from. I walk away with a lifetime worth of knowledge. It’s the end of a definitional era for me. Lambda and I have been inseparable for the last 10 years, but my peace at stepping away a testament to the team of leaders I leave behind in Ahmed Usman Khalid and David Nasi and their crews. I couldn’t have asked for a better unit to lead Lambda forward into new lands. And don’t worry, #serverless community - I may be leaving Lambda, but Lambda isn’t ever going to leave me :) Expect me to chime in from time to time. I have a couple of weeks to recharge, and am excited about what’s next! Thank you, Amazon. It’s been an honor and a pleasure.

Best part of the interview for me. Q: What would be your message to AWS customers, partners and employees as you leave? Selipsky: I want them to know that the things that were most important to me when we founded AWS are still the most important things today, and are still going to be the most important things in the future. 1/That starts with security. 2/Operational excellence and reliability, we are the most reliable cloud. 3/I think third is the unusually long-term perspective that all of Amazon, including AWS, brings to everything we do. 4/And then innovation. We have always been the most innovative in the cloud space, and we intend to continue to do that in the future. #AWS #Cloud

What a great day at #awssummit. Thoroughly knackered, but got some great takeaways and caught up with some fantastic people! My biggest one… lots and lots of companies who started with AWS around 2015 and earlier are all facing the same problem. How do we comply with best practice after rapid growth without any guardrails? Perhaps it warrants a blog post or two! Watch this space.

Is it 5 already??? No way .... On August 20th, 2018, I joined AWS. 5 years ago this week. At AWS, once you reach 5 years, your badge goes from Blue to Orange. The Orange color is very visible in Amazon/AWS, so for me, this badge color change feels special. This is a good time to reflect on these 5 years and I'd like to share some thoughts: So much has happened, to all of us. The Pandemic, work from home and now getting back to office (where I am writing this post from), all these experiences were significant. But most of all, this period made us realize new things about ourselves, our workplace, our society and how unpredictable it can all be. John Lennon wrote: "Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans", this was so true. Amazon and AWS were a very solid place for me during this period, I am thankful for that. During these 5 years I engaged with amazing people, amazing projects, and amazing challenges. All enabling me to test myself and grow professionally and personally. There are too many people to say "Thank You" to, first of all my family, than all those that touched my journey.  At Amazon there is a saying: "It's still Day 1". When you are in the midst of "doing" its difficult to appreciate what this means. At the 5 year milestone, one can have a perspective about this. At times I'm amazed at the magnitude of what we engage with here, and yet it feels, on many occasions, like it's just the tip of the iceberg that we are seeing, hence its still Day 1. So let's call today "Day 1 of the next era", I'm thrilled to see what the future will bring.
