As we approach the anniversary of Juneteenth and the fourth year of its implementation as a federal holiday, we should take the time to reflect on our nation’s journey toward freedom and equality. Although slavery legally ended in 1863 with the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln, the enforcement of this change depended on Union Troops. It wasn’t until they reached Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, that the last slaves were finally freed. This day was then coined Juneteenth and celebrated annually in Texas and around the country in black communities as a day of freedom. Juneteenth and other significant milestones represent the enduring legacy of freedom, justice, and equality that the United States has consistently striven toward. James Baldwin, a literary luminary and significant figure in the landscape of black art and history once said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Although we have further to go and have faced many challenges in the pursuit of progress, the United States has always been marked by our ambition to work toward continual improvement and freedom for all. As you’re enjoying your Juneteenth holiday, take part in the many celebrations occurring nationally and in your own communities. But also, make sure to take the time to reflect on the significance of this holiday and the freedoms of all Americans that we must continually strive to uplift.

Each year, we celebrate a host of holidays that commemorate, recognize, and honor the members of this Country who have sacrificed to make our nation great. The Fourth of July precedes many of these holidays, marking the anniversary of America’s independence. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted, officially breaking free from British rule and establishing the birth of the United States as a sovereign nation. This holiday often takes the form of barbecues with family and friends, outdoor activities enjoyed in the summer sunshine, and lots of good food and memories created with the people we love. Make sure to check out your local museums and community centers for educational opportunities as well as parades, sporting events, historical reenactments, television specials, concerts, and fireworks displays in your area. As always, please remember to make safety a priority. At Amyx, we always encourage taking a moment to recognize the historical significance of the days we commemorate and to remember its importance during contemporary times. This year, we additionally ask that you relax and enjoy your day off in honor of the Independence of our country’s freedom, a nation created by the resilience and determination of the people who make us the Nation we are today. Enjoy the day off tomorrow and we wish all of you a very Happy 4th of July!
