I just finished the learning path “Allyship and Advocacy Across Our Differences”. Had a fantastic session hosted by All Together Cumbria on how to support neurodiverse individuals in the world of work. Key points to ask yourself about how committed your workplace is of inclusivity: • Inclusive and accessible recruitment (e.g. making job adverts accessible, accepting applications in alternative formats) • Communicating vacancies (e.g. advertising vacancies through a range of channels targeted at the disabled community, getting advice and support from Jobcentre Plus, and/or relevant advocate organisations, such as local charities) • Offering an interview to people with a disability or condition (e.g. encourage applications by offering an interview to an applicant who declares they have a condition or disability and meets the essential criteria listed on person specification) • Providing workplace adjustments (e.g. changes to working patterns, adaptations to premises or equipment and provision of support packages). • Supporting existing employees (e.g. Supporting employees to declare a diagnosis, retaining an employee who declares a condition or disability) #Inclusion #Neurodiversity #WorkplaceEquality

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲'𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆 ... "𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘀" Reduced funding and youth club closures, have seen many qualified and capable individuals leave the youth & children’s sector for other more economically stable careers. We identified the devastating impact of the pandemic mass closures of youth facilities and less youth workers. A huge percentage of whom had part-time short-term contracts experienced financial hardship and were unable to return to the sector at all unfortunately. The merit of youth work is well known but extremely undervalued. Youth work plays a crucial role in empowering young people. They fundamentally support young people's development, providing guidance, mentorship, and a safe space for growth and learning. Many youth workers have grown up in the same localities in which they work, and most will have faced the same challenges and obstacles as young people today albeit in different forms. This lived experience qualifies an individual to be a better frontline youth worker because it fosters empathy, understanding, and relatability with the challenges young people face. It enables the youth worker to connect on a deeper level, offering more meaningful support and guidance based on personal understanding and shared experiences. Informal support provided by trusted adults within the community, key figures to improving safety, and a vital protective factor in any public health strategy aimed at tackling knife crime and serious youth violence. Everyday they work closely with Social workers, Teachers, Police, Therapists and many other professionals. They pick up referrals and the huge caseload of work that authorities are overwhelmed and overload with. They advocate for young people and their families. These frontline youth workers are constantly undervalued and underpaid, stereotyped to be wearing hoodies and playing pool all day. Those light workers are trusted adults and have taken the position as youth work practitioners who needlessly require to be supported and represented as key figures in society. They need to be adequately invested in to be trained to understand the impact of trauma on young people. Tiger Brands is expected to recruit unemployed youth and People living with a Disability from local communities to support the company’s drive to increase its presence in South Africa’s informal sector, which includes spaza stores. Job creation in local communities is core to delivering on Tiger Brands’ growth ambitions in the informal sector of the local economy. The business’ expansion in the informal sector has already created around 300 jobs in local communities, with a focus on women. According to recent 2024 figures by Statistics South Africa, half of South Africa’s youth population or 4.9 million young people between the ages of 15 and 34 are unemployed with young women more vulnerable to unemployment compared to young men. And 68% of people living with a disability are without work (National Council of and for People with Disabilities, 2019). In the pilot phase of the Tiger Brands learnership recruitment drive for unemployed youth and young people living with a disability, Tiger Brands will recruit 32 candidates from Soweto, Alexandra, and Tembisa in Gauteng, to work in the communities that they are from. Hello everyone, it's Alyssa here! 👋 As I navigate through my ongoing job search, I've encountered both moments of clarity and frustration. Recently, I engaged in a conversation with a resume advisor that left me contemplating the value society places on traditionally female-dominated, low-paying roles within the education, childcare, and non-profit sectors. It's disheartening to see that despite the invaluable experience and numerous transferable skills cultivated through many years in these fields, there's a pervasive lack of recognition and respect. It's almost as if the contributions made in nurturing the future generation and fostering essential skills are overlooked, a sentiment that feels deeply rooted in misogyny. Having dedicated myself to these sectors and currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Disability Studies at CUNY School of Professional Studies, I've amassed a wealth of skills vital for roles in compliance, advocacy, and equal opportunity promotion. From communication and community engagement to navigating complex organizational structures, my experiences have equipped me with a toolkit ready to tackle any challenge. The disparity between the value placed on these roles and the skills they cultivate is glaring, and it's time for a change. Let's recognize the significance of these sectors, not just in words but in actions. Let's celebrate the diversity and inclusivity they foster and ensure that every individual's journey and expertise are respected and valued. It is Friday, July 12th 2024. Over a year after being terminated, for speaking up against a toxic work environment. My green banner is still flying high, despite the negative wrap it gets. I am Open to Work, I am open to contribute my 2 decades worth of skill to a collaborative team, and am looking for something long term, and passion aligned. Outside of my administrative prowess, operational knowledge, and project management skills, I am also a Doula, I am also a grieving care giver, and a special needs parent. My passions all point to equality in care, reproductive justice, inclusion, and defeating racism in every way honestly because, I have lived a life of inequality of care, reproductive injustice and mistreatment and blatant and covert racism, so I know it's all real and not just hashtags. I have been advised to remove my passion work from my resume and Linkedin account and focus on my functional skills. However, I think my passions are my skills. At the ripe old age of 38, I honestly have no desire to work in any space that doesn't allow all of me. I am sure that could be limiting my job search, but I don't care. I want to wake up everyday and know that my work is making a change for marginalized communities. I want to see the difference my work makes for future generations. However, we have not had a structured way to engage these people who want to be volunteers. As a result, we are now inviting expressions of interest to become our Volunteer Co-Ordinator.  This will not be a paid position, and we will be very grateful if someone with volunteer management experience chooses to put their hand up to assist. We are confident that this can be an inspiring role, where you can work with the great content that Believe:ND has developed, and you will have freedom to manage this function in the best way you can. Social Value in the business world can be a little like this, but thankfully that’s changing fast. I have the ongoing privilege of working with some amazing organisations and within those organisations some amazing individuals. The best part of these best people is that they whilst they talk evangelically about their work, they know it’s what they do not what they say that really makes a difference. This is key to Peopleplus’s Social Recruitment Advocacy Group. We share best practises, we recognise movement along the continuum of social value by awarding our Charter Marks, we support in bids for the social value element and create Toolkits for working with specific cohorts. We create impact summaries, calculate social value, offer funding support amongst many other services. However it is not a talking shop. Language is the parent of thought and thought is the driver of activity. And it is the community impact we have and the activity that we do: with care leavers, the Neurodiverse, refugees, 50+ unemployed; within schools and within the Justice System etc that is the beating heart of the Social Recruitment Advocacy Group. There’s a saying when dealing with social value that “you know you don’t always have to take a camera”. Never let promotion stray into self-promotion. It’s a fine line but it is also important to evangalise over what you do if you truly believe in it. And we do. #SRAG #realchange
