Thank you to Ed Barnston NSch, MIAgrM, FRASE for hosting the Cheshire region of the ALA estate visit on Thursday around the beautiful Barnston Estate. Very interesting to hear and see first hand the practices that are being implemented across the estate, recognising natural capital opportunities and enhancing the balance between nature and agriculture. The right answers can only be achieved by asking the right questions. Is bring farming closer to the consumer a great idea? I think so.
For decades, urban farms and community gardens have helped meet demand for fresh and local produce. Urban farming creatively utilizes limited space, conserves land and transforms vacant lots or buildings into productive greenspaces. Farming in cities can be a rewarding way for communities to grow healthy food while receiving a wide range of other interrelated environmental, economic and social benefits. HABITAT BANK: Commissioned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Green Finance Institute has published The Farming Toolkit for assessing nature market opportunities. https://lnkd.in/eFk_WEXv We recommend reading their ‘Introduction to Nature Markets’, which provides a great overview of the markets that currently exist in England and why farmers may want to participate. 🌍The Talbot River Healthy Environment Initiative supports farmers in the Upper Talbot River subwatershed to improve water quality throughout the region and downstream in Lake Simcoe. The initiative aims to implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) that protect and enhance riparian areas- the transitional areas between water surfaces and uplands. What are some BMPs supported by the initiative? ➡️Buffer Strips: Adding permanently vegetated buffers along streams, rivers, ponds, wetlands and lakes to stabilize soils, slow the flow of stormwater runoff and act as a water filter. ➡️Exclusion Fencing: using physical fencing to exclude livestock from riparian areas lessens sediment disturbance and manure deposition in waterways. Did you know...❓ In the 2022-2023 financial year, Council carried out 20km of mechanical grooming to control roadside weeds, and a further 100km of follow-up weed management along sections of roadside. Weed management contributes to agricultural biosecurity, biodiversity protection, reduction of bushfire hazard and increase in amenity.
