We were delighted to welcome Dr Githinji Gitahi to London this week, for an engaging discussion with Amref UK supporters, partners and staff. This centred on the status of public health in Africa and the work Amref is doing to strengthen health systems to create lasting health change in Africa: strengthening first point of contact and empowering communities as the creators of health. "Healthcare is waiting for people to get sick and treat them. Health is actually providing an environment where everybody first and foremost can preserve their health, because 89% of people are born healthy. That means you need a very robust primary healthcare system - people having care where they live, work and play. This is first point of contact - it could be at home, could be a facility, could be in school, could be wherever. First point of contact is primary care. Secondly is to engage community, educate, empower communities so that actually they're in charge, they can actually be their own first point of care. They are creator of health." The primary agenda of this collaborative meeting was to discuss and implement the Bank Group’s Strategy for Quality Health Infrastructure in #Africa 2020-2030, to significantly improve healthcare standards in #Burundi and across the continent. “The African Development Bank Group’s Strategy for Quality Health Infrastructure in Africa 2020-2030 aims to develop the infrastructure needed for high-quality care for people in Africa, thus limiting the need for medical evacuations. This strategy is one of the knowledge products that the Bank has developed based on the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic,” explained Jean-Claude Nsabimana, a specialist in the social sector at the Bank’s Country Office in Burundi. During the discussion session, attended by various stakeholders, including academic institutions, health professionals, and government officials, Hendrina Chalwe Doroba, head of the Education and Skills Development Division for the East Africa region at the Bank, encouraged stakeholders to propose priority projects for consolidation in the Country Strategy Paper. Launching World Health Organization temporary clinics in River Nile State in #Sudan 🇸🇩 Big thanks to United Nations #CERF and all our donors for the great financial support to World Health Organization Sudan 🇸🇩 Targeting 11% of the 7M IDPs in Sudan due to conflicts, World Health Organization continue supporting the Temporary Integrated clinics as part of the Sudan health emergency response. Funded by #CERF, Al Matamma clinic, River Nile state is one of 9 Temporary clinics Phase III is launched tin April - May 2024 to secure easy access to essential health care services during conflicts. World Health Organization provides supplies, HCWs incentives, operational support resulting in provision of 20 free of charge health services in each clinic and free medications. Phase IV will be launched in May -June 2024 covering 10 states with 20 clinics targeting over 4.7M IDPs and 600K households in the host communities. Celebrating Two Years of the Strengthening Capacity for Health Information Systems Sustainably (#SCHISS) Project in #Zambia! It's that time of year again—we just wrapped up our quarterly Pause and Reflect session. This isn't just any meeting; it's a time when our dedicated team comes together to assess what's working, what isn't, and, most importantly, how we can build micro-strategies to boost our performance. This year, however, marked a truly remarkable milestone for us. Two years have flown by since we embarked on the journey of the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-supported Strengthening Capacity for Health Information Systems Sustainably Project. As we gathered for our Q4 session, the excitement was palpable. We couldn't help but reflect on the incredible progress we've made, the challenges we've overcome, and the impact we've had supporting the Ministry of Health Zambia in strengthening the healthcare information system infrastructure. So, what does this Pause and Reflect session mean to us this year? It's a pivotal moment as we usher in a new year of opportunities and growth. We're taking the time to fine-tune our strategies, celebrate our successes, and learn from our experiences. We're setting our sights even higher for the future, with a renewed commitment to improving healthcare access and quality throughout the region. But we also want to take a moment to express our gratitude to our partners, stakeholders, and everyone who's been a part of this journey. AERC, under funding from USAID the Project Promoting Results and Outcomes through Policy and Economic Levers (PROPEL Health Project), is organizing a collaborative platform for inter-ministerial dialogue between the National Treasury and Economic Planning and the of health in Kenya. PROPEL Health aims to improve the enabling environment for equitable and sustainable health services, supplies, and delivery systems. Under this, two sessions for Inter-Ministerial Policy Dialogues will be held in Kenya. The expected outcome of the policy dialogues is to facilitate the co-creation and launch of a collaborative framework between the Ministry of National Treasury and Economic Planning and the Ministry of Health to strengthen PHC financing and health service delivery. We are working hand in hand with the World Health Organization (WHO) to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in Ethiopia. We have provided the WHO with €1 million for a technical assistance operation that will strengthen primary healthcare system in the country.
