I had the honour of an interview with Unilever Aline Santos Farhat, Unilever's Chief Brand Officer and Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer (featured yesterday on Campaign Magazine UK's Power List 100) to talk about why EDI is on the agenda of every award-winning progressive marketer. Today and every day. 'Unilever is present in 190 countries reaching billions of people every single day. It is obvious to me that we must use the scale, reach and power of our brands to advance equity, diversity and inclusion.' 'We realised a few years ago that to make real systemic change to address harmful stereotypes in marketing, we had to make structural changes to our entire marketing process and across every Unilever brand.' 'Our Act 2 Unstereotype programme, launched in 2021, is how we are addressing all forms of bias in marketing and eradicating harmful stereotypes from new product development through to advertising production.' 'Our marketers know that when the creative is more progressive and provocative this increases our brand scores and drives broader reach for our brands. This The Washington Post article and LinkedIn headline about the demise of #DEI breaks my heart. I don't buy the argument that it's a "change in name only." Creating more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces has fallen under the weight of social pushback, greater tolerance for "fill in the blank" -isms, and the bogeyman called "wokeness." If "woke" up means caring about equal opportunity for all, which includes making room for the qualified to have a chance to reach the top, create wealth, and access the best roles, projects, and opportunities, then sign me up. At one of my past employers, I heard many white, straight men lament, "This place is not a place for a white guy to get ahead." Welcome to the world of everyone else! If promotion and hiring targets create more competition for straight white males, isn't this just fair? Might it mean they may never reach the top because they compete with a larger slate of equally qualified people? Isn't this just fair? Doesn't the rising tide lift all boats? To be biased is to be human. DEI is a proven approach to opening the talent aperture with anti-bias training, targeted talent development, and intentional talent decisions. As leadership turnover accelerates and the younger generations take the helm, we can hope to be more naturally inclusive, but that will take time. Call it what you want, but keep the call to action. It's been proven that diversity of lived experience—which will bring other types of diversity—makes for better decisions, performance, and value. I don't care what we call DEI, but I do care that this name change is far from a name change only. It is a full-scale pullback on investments in all people, tough decisions that drive real and sustainable fairness, and hope for greater representation of racial and ethnic, LGBTQ+, disability, and gender diversity at all levels of the corporation—not just at the bottom. #diversty #equity #inclusion #fairness #belonging

Latest in America. The trends in reporting and policy adjustment do not sound comforting. Inclusion is great, and “safe”. However, equity and inclusion come hand in hand such that we can help everyone thrive. And we all know diversity is instrumental for the best outcome. I’m not so sure if the “rebranding” is leading to the right direction. It is beyond frustrating that an article about #DEI does not include a single reference to #disability #autism #neurodiversity or even #intersectionality. As we see more companies grappling with legal pressures and public scrutiny around DEI, it's clear that the journey toward genuine inclusivity can be complex and often filled with hurdles. However, while terms may change and evolve, the goal of DEI remains the same: building workplaces where everyone has the chance to succeed. Hi there ! 👋 👋 👋 Have you got used to the acronym DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) already? Yes? ... well, you might have to get used to a rebranding of the DEI abbreviation soon ... 😉 According to this Washington Post article below ⬇ there is an actual trend of considering transforming the DEI acronym to something different that would encapsulate a more realistic approach. And that means taking into consideration reversing the letters I and D, keeping E in the middle, and come up with IED instead, in a few words, putting the focus in Inclusion rather than Diversity. ➡ "we under estimated that Inclusion is the real challenge" the article says ... and I couldn' t agree more. When talking to my clients, specially in our first steps of the DEI programs we roll out, they wonder whether their organizations are Diverse enough or not and how could they improve that 🤔 I'm always telling them that they shouldn't' worry much about it as their Companies are already Diverse (... they have women, men, queer people, disabled people, black people or Muslims working in there already!). They should be focussed though on transforming their company in a more Inclusive place to work .... that is the real Challenge as the article says. 🙌 👍 ...
