❓Question: What is your take on inserting a midline or PICC line for transplant patients? Dr. Moureau's response: This patient population is very sensitive and requires careful attention to the type of device chosen, the inserter, the procedure for infection prevention, the management, and evaluation of outcomes. Good training is essential for inserters and those who care for patients to keep risk low. PICCs are commonly used with transplant patients as a reliable form of access with relatively low infection risk. The issue of midline catheters depends more on the type of therapy/infusions needed. Midlines work well for a week or two but often fail in less than a month and should not be used for irritating or vesicant medications.

Hospital-based infections, also known as healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), are infections that patients acquire while receiving treatment for other conditions within a healthcare setting. These infections can complicate treatment, extend hospital stays, and increase morbidity and mortality rates. Understanding the reasons behind their spread and implementing effective prevention strategies are crucial for enhancing patient safety. By addressing the underlying causes of hospital-based infections and implementing comprehensive infection control measures, healthcare facilities can significantly reduce the incidence of HAIs, improving patient outcomes and overall hospital safety. Continuous vigilance, adherence to protocols, and a culture of safety are paramount in the fight against HAIs. #MissionICU #CriticalCare #LifeSavingBeds Maanoj Shah Ashwin Naik Darshan Mahajan Dr. Viraj Vaidya Dr Edmond Fernandes, MD Shanthi Mathur
