This is an incredible and insightful blog from Micaela McConnell at the American Immigration Council. While these policies highlight anti-immigrant sentiments that have surfaced across the nation and are particularly heightened in states like Florida, they ignore the fact that immigrants are vital to states’ economies and local workforces. Immigrants often fill critical roles across the skills spectrum. In Florida in 2022, 36.3% of immigrants were entrepreneurs, 25.3% worked in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, and comprised 44.7% of workers in agriculture. Immigration and immigrants have been and will continue to be vital to Florida. As we look toward the 2025 Florida legislative session, state leaders must consider the long-term detrimental effects that these anti-immigrant bills have and will continue to have on their communities, the state, and the nation.

In 2022, more than one in five Florida residents were immigrants. In that same year, immigrants in Florida were over 14% more likely than their U.S.-born neighbors to be of working age, positioning them to actively participate in the labor force and economy. And they did just that—immigrants contributed $12.0 billion in state and local taxes, punching above their weight as they made up only 26.6% of the state’s workforce. https://lnkd.in/em7z6sq4 Senate Democrats are urging President Joe Biden "to streamline pathways" for illegal immigrants to obtain lawful status, arguing that if former President Donald Trump is reelected, he could start mass deportations. "We urge your Administration to take all available actions to streamline pathways to lawful status for undocumented immigrants, providing certainty to the American businesses, communities, and families who rely on them," 18 Senate Democrats and one independent senator, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, wrote last week in a letter to Biden. The senators highlighted the tax contributions of illegal immigrants They said that in 2019, illegal immigrants paid an estimated $9.7 billion in federal and state taxes and contributed more than $11 billion to social security. They also said that more than 1.1 million U.S. citizens are married to an illegal immigrant and about 4.9 million U.S. citizen children have at least one parent who is an illegal immigrant. This means illegal immigrants accounted for more than 1% of all social security contributions in 2019, per government data. However, the study cited by the lawmakers only included illegal immigrants from Mexico. This also means that illegal immigrants accounted for less than 0.08% of all state and federal taxes in 2019, which was about $13 trillion overall, according to data from the Census Bureau and the nonprofit Tax Foundation. While putting the tax contributions in the spotlight, the senators also said that a pathway to citizenship would require such persons to pay taxes. "Alternatively, streamlining pathways for undocumented immigrants with no criminal history and deep ties to the United States to obtain parole or a lawful immigration status would provide stability to their families, require them to pay taxes, and to check in with the U.S. government regularly," the senators said.

The Presidential election is usually a contest between two individuals, two parties, and their usually differing views on policy -- immigration policy, economic policy, foreign affairs, social welfare issues, and so on. This can be a very healthy contest, both sides compromising and coming up with a reasonable path forward on these various policies and issues. Liberals often want to give too much, conservatives too little. Meet somewhere in the middle and there's at least a chance that we get it right. More formally this is known as the Hegelian Dialectic, proposed by the philosopher Hegel: a thesis (an idea or proposal), an antithesis (kinda' the opposite or counter idea or proposal), and a synthesis (a merging of the two ideas that's better than either of the ideas, a compromise that's the best for everyone concerned). This doesn't always work. An example is when communism (though it was never truly communism but rather authoritarianism posing as communism) and capitalism vied with each other, the thesis and antithesis. It worked for a while, capitalist countries incorporating socialistic ideas such as unemployment insurance, welfare, government healthcare and so forth, while communism incorporated or re-incorporated certain free market concepts. Then Russia failed, China gave up the pretense of being communistic and became more clearly a capitalistic dictatorship, and suddenly there was no opposition to capitalism. The results have been catastrophic, capitalism wreaking havoc in terms of the environment, global hunger, the growing divide between haves and have nots, and an outright assault on social programs in both capitalistic and formely communistic countries, leading in turn to a move toward the right across the world. And in America. And to add to the global battle between right and left, America is experiencing its own battle that has grown into a monstrous struggle not about economic or even environmental or social issues, but a full-out battle between forces supporting democracy, and forces supporting autocracy, also known as fascism. And here we are on the verge of a Presidential and congressional election, which will be, in essence, a choice between democracy and autocracy (dictatorship, fascism, whatever you want to call it). All this is to say: don't be fooled into thinking that this is about abortion or immigration or unions or welfare or foreign policy. It SHOULD be about those things, but it's not, and to misunderstand the choice you're making poses an existential threat to America and the world. If Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney were running, it would probably be about how much, if anything, the government pays to the unemployed and how many people are allowed to enter America... but it's not. This is not an election between Biden and Trump. This next election is a choice between democracy and autocracy, between freedom and dictatorship, and if enough of you make the wrong choice... ... America dies.

Two-Thirds of the United States population are greater than 5th (+) generation Citizens of the United States. One-Third are children of immigrants. The one-third are they contributing equally to this country? Are there barriers to them participating in the workforce? Are there pathways to assist licensed professionals take courses to match the regulations of the United States codes so that they can resume their profession in engineering, medical, science? Flat tax was introduced in 2009 and is being reintroduced. What it does is ensure all people pay the same flat rate. No refund. This could put an end to migrants not paying tax with some exceptions such as agricultural picking roles. If you don’t know an immigrant you probably don’t know that thousands of European, Asian, African immigrants have degrees, but for many they can’t resume their profession because of immigration rules on “no work”. I don’t like the fact that 16 million migrants rushed the border since Biden. I also agreed with Trump who was being very selective on “who” should be a priority based on the individual’s personal accomplishments. Trump was spot on that a massive group of low skill-no skill people are not good candidates because let’s face it…America is an expensive place to live, and if you are a LSNS individual lifelong poverty could be your fate with no fault on discrimination. Between 1937-1967 there was a Baby Boom as a result of ‘The New Deal’ and married women were terminated from their jobs because of a new law. Now America’s last Baby Boomers are entering retirement in 2034. Reality is that tax “payers” are the hamsters that keep Social Security going for the next group of retired people. One-third are children of immigrants. America needs working aged people, but more importantly America needs people with degrees and money in their pocket to start a legitimate business that employs workers. Not counting new migrants

Sunak suggests plan to stop small boats won’t fully succeed before general election but claims it is working – politics live updates: Prime minister insists he is ‘not complacent’ and says figures showing fall in crossings compared with 2022 shows his approach is working In his pooled TV interview, Rishi Sunak also stressed the government’s commitment to extending access to free childcare. He said: It is really important to me that young families have access to high quality affordably childcare. That is why the government is expanding its offer of free childcare. Currently working families can access 30 hours of free childcare for three and four-year-olds. As part of our big reforms we are extending that all the way down to little ones as young as nine months. One of my five priorities is to stop the boats, the current system is both unsustainable and is completely unfair, but particularly unfair on British taxpayers who are forking out millions of pounds to house illegal migrants in hotels and local communities. That’s not right. We’ve got to put a stop to that. And we’re working on it. It’s not an easy problem to fix. I never said we would be able to solve it overnight, it will take time and we have to attack it from lots of different ways. But I am pleased that the number of illegal migrants crossing this year is down for the first time in some years. I am not complacent. I never said this would be easy, I never said it could be fixed overnight. We are going to attack it from every angle and not stop until we are done. I want it to be done as soon as possible but I also want to be honest with people that it is a complex problem, there is not one simple solution and that it can’t be solved overnight and I wouldn’t be being straight with people if I said that was possible.
