✈️✈️ As a major polluter, it’s surprising that aviation is an undertaxed industry – it’s also an enormously missed opportunity to help us address human rights challenges resulting from climate change. That's why we responded to the call for input on United Nations Resolution on Human Rights and Climate Change. Our submission outlined how aviation taxes could address the impact of loss and damage from the adverse effects of climate change on human rights. Flight shaming is a little shameless to tackle an industry that is responsible for 2.5% of global mobility emissions when automotive is more than 30% and the maritime industry over 60%. And while the business jet community is the target of this lashing out, it turns out the industry has reached its goal already according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), leaving once again the automotive and maritime industry behind. Are we repeating the plastic straw clean-up chase leaving the packaging bulk behind? #aviation #businessjets #emissions https://lnkd.in/e_Z797YS

Interesting new research on public opinion about aviation and climate released this week. Three points that jumped out: 1️⃣ Climate concerns do not shape people’s flying behaviour, and only around one in four people disapprove of others flying frequently. Age and personal income play a far bigger role than concern about climate change in explaining variations in flying behaviour. 2️⃣ The public want flyers and airlines to pay for decarbonising aviation, but think that those with the broadest shoulders should bare the largest costs. 3️⃣ Tackling private jet usage and promoting train-to-plane policies are the clear first steps for any aviation policy wanting to command public support. The majority think government should be encouraging people to take trains instead of planes, and there is strong support for action to either tax or ban private jets IPPR have called for increased taxes on private jets and a full review of the UK’s approach to aviation decarbonisation to be brought forward to 2025. Public opinion about the fairest ways to speed up emissions reductions should be a crucial part of that review. #aviation #climate #decarbonisation Read more here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ew5_xDE9

For the “difficult to decarbonise” air transport sector, the advancement of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and alternative propulsion sources are well under way, along with technological and operational emissions mitigation measures. But even collectively they are likely to fall significantly short of the achievement of emissions reduction goals stemming from the #ParisAgreement on climate change. Hence demand management will be necessary. Fiscal instruments such as taxes and frequent flyer levies fall foul of privacy and competitive issues, and notably of the economic regulatory framework unique to international air transport services. But capping emissions directly is feasible and would have definitive effect. In a final op-ed article for GreenAir News before his retirement, Chris Lyle elaborates on the issues and puts on the table an emissions capping concept with airports as the nub in the context of the flights they enable. #sustainableaviation https://lnkd.in/eQ7sQrr6
