How can #airlines become fully fledged retailers now? I really enjoyed our panel discussion at FTE in Dublin with the diverse mix of the moderator and co-panelists across airline business models and regions. The ultimate fully fledged retailing vision is all about being able to achieve commercial flexibility to do what low cost carriers have been doing for decades - and much more. And to create seamless customer experiences as is normal for any online store. This requires the move away from a monolithic PSS environment to a modular technology eco-system allowing full business flexibility. The transition will be the main challenge, in terms of technology strategy but also mindset change. PLAY airlines and other low cost carriers are some steps ahead and continue to further enhance and modernise their #digital capabilities. This has become top priority for network carriers as well. To start with modernising the digital eco-system and improving customer experience and self servicing capabilities and allowing business control and experimentation for their teams can be a key driver to develop the mindset change by engagement and will ensure competitive edge on the way - today and tomorrow - to the final architecture in 5 years or more. Ricard Vilà , Chief Digital Officer at LATAM Airlines pointed out the three key elements to how to transform 1. end to end accountability for business outcomes, 2. simplification and 3. ultimately a brand new architecture without legacy components Dr. Jost Daft , Head of Order Transformation at Lufthansa Group announced 2028 as the year for full #OOM transformation at LH Group. He confirmed that this is a change affecting the whole eco-system and requiring collaboration across departments, teams and airline brands. The first role they were looking to fill for the transformation project was the internal communications one. Jost also underlined the strength of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) consortium approach for this journey. I look forward to more discussions at Future Travel Experience Asia.
