Here are some examples of how parental leave can be structured to accommodate diverse families: 👉Equal Leave for All Parents: Offer the same amount of leave to all parents, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or whether they became parents through birth, adoption, or surrogacy. 👉Adoption and Surrogacy Leave: Provide leave for parents who are adopting or using surrogates, ensuring they have time to bond with their new child. 👉Non-Binary and Gender-Neutral Parental Leave Policies: Craft policies that do not assume binary genders and allow for gender-neutral terminology to be inclusive of all gender identities. 👉Part-time Leave Options: Offer part-time leave options that allow parents to gradually transition back to work, accommodating various family needs and dynamics. 👉Extended Family Leave: Consider including leave policies for extended family members who may be primary caregivers, reflecting the reality of many diverse family structures. 👉Foster Parent Leave: Provide leave for foster parents, recognizing the importance of supporting children in transitional living situations. 👉Flexible Work Arrangements Post-Leave: Offer flexible work schedules or remote work options for parents returning from leave, supporting a balance between professional and family responsibilities. In the Crafty Counsel Community Hub chat room, sometimes a post catches on and sometimes it doesn’t. Last year a member of our community posted something about the challenges of being a parent and an employee, and a feeling of not having time to do either job well enough. That post did catch on, and our community member received so many supportive messages from people who had had the same feeling, it was great. So we thought: why not do a series of 5 virtual sessions for in-house lawyers on this theme of parenting, parental leave etc? Topic 1 | Managing "alternative" routes to parenthood (IVF, adoption, surrogacy, fostering etc)  Topic 2 | "OMG - we are pregnant" - how / when do I tell my boss? Topic 3 | Preparing for Parental leave Topic 4 | Preparing to come back  Topic 5 | Juggling a job and children These sessions will be hosted by volunteers from the community for the community! At Armadillo, care for our employees extends to their families.   We offer 12 weeks of paid parental leave for both primary and secondary caregivers, regardless of gender, which covers superannuation accrued during this period. Our parental leave policy applies when:   ·      an employee gives birth; ·      an employee’s spouse or de facto partner gives birth; ·      an employee adopts a child under the age of 16; ·      an employee has a child via surrogacy; and ·      an employee or the employee’s spouse or de facto partner has a stillbirth.   As of 1 July, we also increased our compassionate leave from 2 days to 5 days. How much shared parental leave eligible parents get depends on how much: * maternity leave the birth parent has taken * adoption leave the primary adopter has taken The birth parent or primary adopter can take up to 52 weeks of statutory maternity or adoption leave. They must take a minimum of 2 weeks' leave after the birth or adoption. After this they can end their leave so the remaining can be shared between the 2 parents.
