🎗 To kick off breast cancer awareness month, let’s have a look at an important issue in breast cancer surgery. The rate of positive surgical margins after breast cancer surgery depends on many factors such as the type of breast cancer and type of surgery performed. A positive surgical margin can lead to a decision to reoperate, depending on the context. 📰 A paper published last year by researchers from Tampere University Hospital analyzed the positive margin rates and reoperation rates in over 4.000 breast cancer cases. The positive margin rate was 23% after breast conserving surgery and 9% after mastectomy. Overall, 3 out of 4 patients with a positive surgical margin underwent a reoperation. Many other papers have shown positive margin rates and reoperation rates in the same order of magnitude. 💙 These staggering figures highlight the need to keep striving for better surgical outcomes. We believe that providing the surgeon with a clear view of what was resected, right at the point of surgery, is the key to achieve this. 🎗 Check out this clinical case illustration to see how specimen PET-CT imaging can help: https://lnkd.in/eDGDk6Bn 🎗Find the complete paper here: https://lnkd.in/eiGTmdP7 #XEOS #PETCT #imaging #medicalimaging #specimenimaging #intraoperative #AURA10 #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness

Historically, surgical therapy for small cell lung cancer has been considered little value. Under the leadership of Dr. Dörr, our team has now conducted a meta-analysis involving over 100,000 patients. The results show clear signals that surgeries could be significant within the context of multimodal therapy concepts. Although only a small proportion of patients may be eligible for surgery, we should not deny them the potential survival benefit. While a paradigm shift is still distant, this article could spark important discussions in multidisciplinary tumor boards. #lungcancer #surgery #metaanalysis #smallcelllungcancer #kleinzelligeslungenkarzinom #Chirurgie #metanalyse #universitaetsmedizinessen #ruhrlandklinik https://lnkd.in/ejV2ZtK4

🔍 Recent Study Highlights Advances in Pancreatic Cancer Surgery Journal: Annals of Surgery Study Focus: Examines postoperative outcomes for patients with locally advanced (LAPC) and borderline resectable pancreatic cancer (B)RPC. Key Insights: Total of 879 patients studied, with 12% LAPC and 88% B(RPC). Post-surgery complications and survival rates are comparable between LAPC and B(RPC). Findings support the viability of surgical intervention in LAPC cases. DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0000000000006289 This study underscores the potential for effective surgical outcomes in what was once considered challenging cases of pancreatic cancer. #HealthcareInnovation #PancreaticCancerAwareness #ClinicalResearch

This detailed study explores the efficacy of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in detecting positive margins during segmental mastectomy procedures, compared with standard extensive processing (SEP). The objective? To shed light on the potential of DBT as a game-changer in intraoperative margin assessment, paving the way for more precise and effective surgical interventions for breast cancer patients. Join us on this journey of innovation and discovery. Data Source: Ko Un Park, MD, et al. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis for Intraoperative Margin Assessment during Breast-Conserving Surgery. Happy to share that our abstract presented at the 42nd Congress of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) is now published in European Journal of Surgical Oncology. We describe a novel technique for performing delayed SLNB using ICG, as the dye appears to be retained in the sentinel nodes for up to 3 weeks. This allows omission of axillary surgery at the time of breast cancer surgery, when the indication of such procedure is not clear and the risk lymphoedema outweighs the benefit of doing SLNB. https://lnkd.in/d29Tswgw
