While big banks increasingly shy away from small business loans, community banks continue to support entrepreneurs. As a business owner quoted in this Inc. Magazine article (link in comments) says, a community bank can get to know your business in a way a big bank can't: "They can understand your situations and can make direct decisions to approve lending that would not otherwise have been approved by the banking system." Community banks also know the market small businesses operate in and have a vested interest in supporting the community. I agree with Rebeca. Community banks 100% fill this role. Large banks tend to have gaps within their structure and certain threshold ranges that the structure falls within. Also, community banks are much better equipped to react to local market needs. For example, I live in a market with large agricultural borrowing needs. The large banks have mostly pulled out, but even while here, had neither the desire, expertise, or competence to fulfill the demand.
