Respiratory Syncytial Virus can affect a person of any age but causes the most problems for the very young and very old. Here are four steps to take to help prevent the spread of RSV: 1. If you are 60 or older, talk with your healthcare provider to see if RSV vaccination is right for you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends RSV vaccination to help prevent severe RSV illness after a patient and healthcare provider work together to come to a decision about whether vaccination is best for the patient. 2. Avoid close contact with infected people. 3. Wash your hands with soap and water after coming into contact with an infected person. 4. Stay at home if you feel ill. #RSV #RSVAwarenessMonth #RSVTreatment #WashYourHands

We believe the absence of significant COVID deaths or admissions in late 2023 resulted from random noise in this setting of very low rates of occurrence. While there have been calls for preventative measures to counter the current modest increases in COVID infection rates, it is unclear which measures might be effective. We tested state-level relationships between 2023 COVID cases and vaccination rates from various periods. There were strong negative relationships in 2021 and 2022 between vaccination and cases when COVID rates were much higher, but that relationship was lost in April 2023 when COVID rates were much lower. Other studies have shown reduced vaccine effectiveness in 2023. https://lnkd.in/ebZZUbPu

Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs (alveoli) in one or both lungs, causing them to fill with fluid or pus[1]. It can be caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi[1]. The severity of pneumonia can range from mild to life-threatening, and it is most serious for infants, young children, people older than age 65, and those with weakened immune systems[1]. Symptoms of pneumonia can vary and may include[2]: - Cough, possibly producing greenish, yellow, or bloody mucus - Fever, sweating, and shaking chills - Shortness of breath - Rapid, shallow breathing - Sharp or stabbing chest pain that worsens when breathing deeply or coughing - Loss of appetite, low energy, and fatigue - Nausea and vomiting, especially in small children - Confusion, especially in older people Bacterial pneumonia, which is the most common form, tends to be more severe than other types of pneumonia and may require medical care[2]. Symptoms of bacterial pneumonia can develop gradually or suddenly, with a fever that may rise as high as 40.5 Degree Celcius [2]. Pneumonia can be spread through coughing, sneezing, or even breathing[3]. To reduce the risk of getting pneumonia, you can follow preventive measures such as[3]: - Practicing good hand hygiene - Avoiding smoking - Staying up-to-date on recommended vaccinations If you suspect you or someone in your family has symptoms of pneumonia, it is essential to seek medical care as soon as possible, especially if there is difficulty breathing, a bluish color in lips and fingertips, chest pain, a high fever, or a cough with mucus that is severe or worsening[2]. Treatment for pneumonia depends on the cause and severity of the infection[5]. More than 100 cases of measles have been reported in the United States since the start of the year, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that a rapid rise in cases — significantly more than in recent years — poses a renewed threat to the country’s disease elimination status. Measles was eliminated in the US in 2000, meaning no outbreaks have persisted for a year or more. But from January 2020 through March 2024, there were 338 measles cases reported in the US and 29% of those cases occurred during the first quarter of this year, almost all in people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown. Travel-related measles cases are expected, but vaccination coverage is key to ensuring outbreaks don’t persist in the US, according to the CDC. When travelers bring measles into the US, it can spread and cause outbreaks among people who are not vaccinated. Here's the latest: https://lnkd.in/eGfGbNsC

KD Hospital is committed to fostering a culture of lifelong health in our community. Vaccination is a cornerstone of preventive healthcare, and we're dedicated to raising awareness about its importance for adults. In this spirit, we want to spotlight the pneumococcal vaccine, a powerful shield against serious infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. Easily transmitted through coughing or sneezing, these bacteria can lead to a range of illnesses, from pneumonia and meningitis to bloodstream and even ear infections. The impact of these complications can be significant. Through increased awareness and education, we can empower adults to make informed decisions about their health. KD Hospital encourages everyone to learn more about the pneumococcal vaccine and discuss it with their doctor. Together, let's champion awareness and conquer preventable illnesses. #KDHospital #VaccinateForLife #PneumococcalPower #PreventiveHealth #HealthyCommunity #StopTheSpread #TalkToYourDoctor
