This appears to be a clear effort on AHIMA's part to slap a bandaid on longstanding organizational deficits and remain financially solvent.
As AHIMA members, we already have the privilege of paying for -
1. Yearly membership dues
2. Testing and retake fees
3. Recertification fees
4. 20-40 CEUs every two years
Demanding that 40% of those CEUs come directly from AHIMA is laughable, considering that the depth and breadth of their existing CEU offerings doesn't even come close to covering the needs and desires of their staggeringly diverse membership.
How and why is an IR coder expected to get 40% of their CEUs from AHIMA when most of their offerings don't directly relate to their area of practice? AHIMA seemingly wants them to purchase some softball CEUs like a presentation on "How To Cope With Zoom Fatigue" in order to pad their pockets.
Don't get me started on how Component State Associations, who have been developing their own industry-relevant, high-quality CEUs, have been left out of this discussion. AHIMA should be working with these CSAs to develop trusted, impactful CEU offerings that count towards this 40% requirement, not further strengthening their position as the cash-hungry, monopolistic credentialing body decisions like these make them out to be.
AHIMA is beholden to its members, just like we are beholden to it. If you agree with any of these sentiments, I URGE you to sign this petition and make your voice heard.
