The undervalued nurse. Nursing remains a grossly undervalued profession with pay not only lower than inflation but poor progression in experience. In 1990 average nursing pay was $37,783 or $18.16 an hour with national minimum wage at $3.80. To make the SAME in today's value it would be $87,692 or $42.16/hr with national minimum wage at $7.80 (and significantly higher in most states.) That's staff nursing... which means most Directors should be well in to 6 digits. Until we start realizing that this is a huge undervalued and undercompensated profession our care, especially in hospitals, will continue to decline. #nurses #nursepay #healthcare #nursevalue
