This is such a good question from Deirdre CHEERS. What as your first job and what did it reveal about your career path? My first job was a hairdresser where I loved to get to know people as individuals, build relationships and then give them a hairstyle that lifted their spirits, improved their appearance and suited their lifestyle. Now I am a certified #GallupStrengthsCoach working with #leadership where I get to know leaders as individuals, build relationships and help them unpack their #personalgenius which along with #producingbusinessoutcomes, lifts their spirits and helps them work in #theirzone (in a way that suits who they really are). A few good insights here........... What did your first job reveal about your career path? Can you comment below - I be so interested to hear.
What unexpected insights did your first job reveal about yourself and your career path? My first job was assessing boys aged 10-16 years for placement in a residential care setting. The boys I met came from all sorts of families - some struggling financially, most 'out of control' as far as their families were concerned, and all desperately looking for solutions because they loved their boys. I learned unexpectedly (and quite quickly) that I could sit in an interview room with furniture flying and diffuse high level family conflict. I also learned that placing a child/young person in care wasn't necessarily the right answer. It led to a career path of determination to keep children and young people at home with their families wherever and however possible, and a commitment to continuity of relationships. #relationshipsmatter #childconnectionsystem Barnardos Australia

Is this a Job worth doing? It’s been almost 4yrs since I applied to my LEA to be a representative for good in our community of Kildare North, giving a voice to neighbours who were struggling with social problems. Circumstances they inherited from a failed government system that coroded away the very core of family life in working class areas and also those who are stuck in the middle who work and commute long distances, long hours at the expense of their families, high childcare costs, college, medical fees etc etc. These circumstances having horrendous side affects on their personal wellbeing. The personal development I experienced while engaging with members of the public educating me on the doorsteps was truly humbling and eye opening. The political landscape has changed so much in the last 4yrs. I thought I would share a little of my thoughts before your local candidates start knocking on your door. I believe anyone who puts themselves forward for this #job is genuinely interested in the greater good on a local and national level. I would always be polite and respectful when I get a knock regardless of the person’s political persuasion. I can choose whether to engage or not but be always respectful. I decided to sit this one out because my own personal beliefs have changed and I don’t think I’d be in a position to represent those who are crying out for change #politicalcareers #Activist #community #politics #ireland #Healthandwellbeing #Respect

Great reflections and question from Deirdre CHEERS. One of my first “real jobs” in the human services sector was working with adults with significant intellectual disability in community-based supported living. Everyone I worked with had spent some time in a large residential institution, and everyone was traumatised by that experience in various ways. That experience taught me a few things: - that the quality of relationships = quality of life in many ways; - that people can only live their best lives when they’re embedded in strong networks of people who care and a community that includes them; and - that people’s safety is dependent on the strength and size of their network - the more people who care about a person in their network, the less vulnerable they become. Looking back on that experience now, I can see how it led me to the kinds of roles I’ve had the privilege to serve in, and why family- and network-focused safeguarding has become such a core part of my professional ethos, practice and practice leadership.

Many foster care recruitment agencies make the mistake of focusing on themselves and their agency achievements on their website rather than speaking directly to foster parents and highlighting how they cater to their needs and solve their challenges. A simple pivot away from a self-focused website to a family-focused website can make a world of difference to your overall recruitment success. #FamilyRecruitment #FosterCare #FosterFamilyRecruitment

Recruiters must grasp the significance of honesty for those committing to foster care. Emphasising the importance of stable, supportive environments and highlighting the crucial role of quality education in addressing children's trauma is essential. Without this understanding, retaining dedicated foster carers becomes challenging! #ifnotnowwhen #nfcq #fostercare #honestyinrecruitment #supportiveenvironments #qualityeducation #traumainformedcare #retainfostercarers 👇
Some one messaged me yesterday and said “Watch out the big recruiters aren’t going to like your new video 🙀” However it’s no secret that I don’t think the ‘big recruiters’ are getting it right, to be honest the data tells us they aren’t, and they can’t keep blaming the cost of living crisis and foster carers aging out. For instance there is a massive cohort of people on this platform who will not see themselves as ‘foster carers’ due to the continual misleading recrutiment narrative. What a huge missed opportunity. I can only imagine how many people on here would be beyond amazing at fostering, thousands of you. This video will appeal to those people, ones who see it and want to help prevent these moves, to give children skilled, qualified and stable trauma informed nurturing homes. A cohort that can, for the every first time, take a qualification through NFCQ National Foster Carers Qualifications and become a new generation of of qualified skilled foster carers, professionally providing high standards of care in nurturing, knowledgeable, trauma-informed homes. You need a great deal more than learning to skateboard. Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/eXdcgv6y #becomeafostercarer #morethanskateboarding #raisingstandards
