"Currency in circulation in the first year of the war was mainly in bank notes, state treasury notes, and the small change bills of #railroads and other large corporations. In December 1861 bank note circulation reached $115,000 backed by $55,000 in specie. In 1862 notes of the Confederate States government reached Florida and since state treasury notes were backed by #publiclands the Confederate notes were used to pay taxes and purchase state lands. In 1862 fractional notes of five to fifty cents were authorized by the legislature and Tallahassee and Pensacola quickly put the small change notes in circulation." #confederatepark

One of the greatest disservice one can do to themselves is surround themselves is to surround themselves with "yes" people. While no one is suggesting filling your inner circle with contrarians, Iya important to have people around you who are not afraid to "check" you if you need checking. Find you a truth teller. For some, that's a friend, colleague or mentor. For others that may look like hiring an Executive Coach who helps identify your blindspots and holds you accountable to your goals. However you get them, get someone who is not afraid to tell you the truth. Your leadership depends upon it.

As campaigning for the #UKGeneralElection picks up, I had the privilege to attend a roundtable discussion on protecting Black women in Parliament chaired by the iconic Baroness Doreen Lawrence. A moment in history and hope for a new way forward 🖤🤍 *** Protect Black Women held its inaugural parliamentary roundtable on 14 May 2024 at Portcullis House. The roundtable was chaired by Baroness Doreen Lawrence and attended by the following MPs: Diane Abbott, Dawn Butler MP, Florence Eshalomi, Chi Onwurah, Abena Oppong-Asare MP, Kate Osamor, Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP and Claudia Webbe MP. Founders of the Protect Black Women initiative - Dyann Heward-Mills, Foluke Taylor and Christine Fostvedt-Mills were also present. The founders of Protect Black Women explained that the mission of the initiative is to form an empathetic and empowering support system for Black women in the UK. Protect Black Women facilitated a safe space for attendees to reflect on their experiences of misogyny and racism in professional and personal contexts. Participants discussed the importance of embracing community, self-care and healing practices to counter the effects of misogyny and racism. It was agreed that further work is needed to ensure those in positions of power set the right tone at the top and create safe environments for Black women in Parliament and all places of work. Participants agreed to reconvene on a more regular basis and to continue to support and empower each other and future generations.
