Every designer has been there at least once - the most common and uncomfortable experience we all know too well... Client: "Hey, I saw your work at the corner of the street, and I want to get the interiors of my house done." 🏠 Interior Designer: "Sure, please tell me your requirements. Do you have a budget in mind?" 💭 Client: "I'm not sure about the budget, but mine is a 3BHK house, and I want completely modern and unique interiors. It should be really different and out of the box. Can you create some 3D designs and show us?" 🌟 Designer: "I think I understand what you're looking for. Let me prepare a sample room design and show it to you." 👷♂️ After two days of hard work on the 3D design, the designer showed it to the client. Client: "Oh, okay... I'll let you know." A week of silence, then: "Well, I showed the design to my family, and they don't like it much, so we may not proceed further." 🤷♂️ Designer: "About the payment, sir." 💰 Client: "The design wasn't to our taste. Why should I pay for something I don't like?" 🤔 Designer: "But I've invested two days of my time creating it." ⏳ Client: "I'm sure it's your everyday job. Who charges for quotations? I just asked you for a quotation." And the call ends abruptly. ☎️ The frustrated designer, after some thought, decides to let it go as there's not much that can be done. Meanwhile, the client approaches another designer.... Client: "Hey, I saw your work at the corner of the street, and I want to design my house..." And the story continues. How many of you have had a 'déjà vu' client experience like this? In my initial practice days, I learned that not everyone understands the value of design work. It's like comparing professional services to casual price inquiries at a grocery store. 🛒 After these learning experiences, I've realized that clear communication from the start is key to a successful project. 🗣️✨ What are your thoughts? I've had a few lovely enquiry calls over the last couple weeks, and there's been a theme... 'How does it work?' My answer is always 'it depends'. Because I'm always solving different problems for my clients 😆 Real examples of how I work with interior designers and businesses across the UK right now: 👉 1. Working with Office Fit-Out companies who don't have in-house designers. Usually working with the end client and working on the project from brief to completion. Or as and where needed 🌈 👉 2. Working with solo designers/businesses who are temporarily inundated with project work and need some extra hands getting things done. I would usually work on particular tasks - from spatial planning, specific detail drawings or FF&E specifications. I wouldn't usually be involved with the end client, and would stay solely behind the scenes helping 😎 👉 3. Working with small/mid-size D&B businesses who do have internal designers, that are too swamped to churn out anymore design work. I work with these companies to allow them to respond to more enquiries. Usually, I would dip in and out when and where needed - deciphering briefs, drawings, specification, and creating presentation documentation in their brand. So that they can present seamlessly to their clients (and win the work 🤞). 👉 4. Working with strategists to help bring vision, clarity and change to large businesses. This can be drawing works, documentation, specification and more. General behind the scenes help to get everything the end client needs to implement the change needed 🙌 👉 5. Working with property developers to renovate new and existing properties such as HMO's, Airbnb's and commercial spaces. Variety of site surveys, spatial planning, detail drawings, and full décor and FF&E specification. Handing over to the developers to implement 🏡 So the answer to the original question 'it depends' still remains 😆 The level and service you require is completely moulded around the support you need. Working together to solve design problems & to do lists. Ultimately keeping your clients happy and getting the job won and done 🏆 Another thing I always say - I'm a message away when you need a friendly and personalised freelance interior designer 😊 Happy Friday All!
