Netflix has revealed its first attempt at a live sport broadcast will happen on 14 November this year. The Netflix Cup, a star-studded cross-code Golf event, will see F1 drivers and PGA golfers from Netflix’s Drive to Survive and Full Swing docuseries pair up for a 9-hole ‘made for TV’ challenge the same week as the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix. Four pairs will ‘Swing to Survive’ playing eight holes, with the top two teams advancing to the final hole, and the chance to be crowned the first Netflix Cup champions. Norb Gambuzza, PGA Tour SVP of media and gaming, said: “New and diverse audiences have come to know more about both our sports and their athletes through Full Swing and Drive to Survive, and we are excited to team up with Netflix, Formula 1 and the Las Vegas Grand Prix on this exciting concept.” Gemba Insights shows less than half (49%) of Australian Golf fans are also F1 fans, providing both sports with a fertile ground for cross pollination and access to new audiences. The Netflix Cup marks Netflix’s first foray into live sports, having limited their sports content to documentaries, including F1’s Drive to Survive, Golf’s Full Swing, Tennis’ Break Point, and Tour De France: Unchained. Having famously said in the past that the streaming giant is '…not anti-sport, just pro-profit’ (in reference to the massive rights fees associated with global live sport rights), testing the waters with a fully owned and created event is a great way to bypass that big overhead.   Whilst the documentaries have often provided a very effective gateway for non-fans to discover a sport and convert to passionate supporters (especially in the USA where F1 fandom exploded off the back of the series), the industry will be watching closely to see if Netflix can pull off the even more technical challenge of delivering a global live sport broadcast. #linkedinsportschallenge Day 3: What recent trends have you observed in sports & how are they shaping the future? A recent trend I have seen is the increase of live-streaming and broadcasting sports, especially at the grassroots level. My dad and I are die-hard racing fans and most Friday nights in the summer, we can be found at our local stock car racing track, Delaware Speedway. Before the pandemic, the only way to follow the action was to buy a ticket and it was a similar story at other Ontario race tracks. Since then, Delaware has partnered with a local TV channel to broadcast their weekly program on their channel as well as on YouTube, similarly to several of the provincial touring series and other tracks. I believe it is shaping the future by bringing new eyes to grassroots racing and leading to larger car counts, more track and car sponsorships and activations, and bigger crowds supporting the track. I believe other grassroots sports can follow this lead by showcasing a professional looking broadcast and streaming online, particularly on free platforms to build their brand and open opportunities for further growth. #linkedinsportschallenge #sportsbiz

The last line of defense One of the undisputed tenets of media is that live sports is one of the last bastions of live audiences. For example, the NFL accounted for 82 of the 100 most-watched US TV broadcasts in 2022. Per renown media analyst MoffetNathanson “sports are the last line of defense for the cable bundle”. Broken economics However, the business model around sports rights is broken. TV & Streaming rights, for sports in the US, increased from $15B in 2015 to $25B in 2023! Who is paying the bill for this incremental $10B in value? These costs could be spread across the subscribers of the cable bundle as a “tax” (and to advertisers). It didn’t matter if you watched the NFL, you were paying for it as part of your cable bundle. The whole model is upended when consumers can opt out and switch to a la carte streaming options. What is driving the cost increase of $10B in 8 years? Sports leagues chasing profits. Broadcasters locked in a negotiating loop against each other as they need live sports in their offerings. And the last entrants are big tech platforms that use sports to pull you into their ecosystem and monetize you in other ways. The likes of Amazon, Google, and Apple are beholden to different economics given their platforms and business models. Netflix’s sports strategy Netflix is charting a fascinating path that combines fiscal prudence with creative storytelling. How do you leverage the allure of sports without spending billions on sports rights? “We aren’t anti-sports, we’re pro-profit” Ted Sarandos said in a January conference, and Netflix is sticking to that principle. Producing documentary series on F1, Golf, Tennis, and Cycling has proven to be a successful strategy. Yes, you don’t get the same audience scale as live sports, but then it’s a fraction of the cost as well. Netflix's latest move is a live golf event featuring F1 and PGA golfers. It lets them place a tentative foot in live sports, expands their advertising inventory, all at a fraction of the cost of league rights. Time will tell if this is the right strategy. This is such an interesting partnership. The dynamic collaboration between the LPGA and Fenway Sports marks a significant business model change for the LPGA. As a business venture, I understand this strategy coming from an organization lacking resources due to revenue constraints. By joining forces, the LPGA and Fenway Sports are setting a powerful example of what can be achieved when organizations partner and invest in women's sports.
