Shifts in America’s K-12 education landscape have led to a significant decline in key elements of educators’ engagement, including knowing what’s expected of them, having the ability to use their strengths every day, and having a sense of purpose in their work. Where do you stand on the future of K12 education? The pandemic threw traditional schooling methods into chaos, but necessity is the mother of invention. We have seen teachers and students adapt with a resilience that has been both necessary and inspiring. Virtual classrooms popped up overnight. New technologies were adopted, and we've seen a glimpse of what could be the future of education. But what does this mean for K12 education? Is this just a temporary blip, or are we witnessing the first steps towards a technological revolution in teaching? The potential benefits are enormous. Imagine a world where location or income doesn’t dictate educational opportunities. A world where personalized learning pathways become the norm and not the exception. But with every revolution comes challenges—access to resources, maintaining engagement, safeguarding online environments; these are all issues that need addressing. So I pose the question again: what does this mean for K12 education? Are we ready to embrace technological innovation for a more equitable and effective learning journey? The answers may not be clear yet, but one thing is certain—the conversation is worth having.

Compared to employees working in other occupations, K-12 teachers face greater challenges in various ways. They are… - less likely to have the materials and equipment they need to do their work right - more likely to experience frequent burnout - less likely to be treated with respect at work Amid the highs and lows of K-12 teaching lies a pedagogical shift in the profession. Education leaders can no longer assume that the mission, purpose and meaningfulness of the teaching role are enough to make their employees stay. A timeline of the "recent" K-12 education "reforms": 1. No Child Left Behind, George H. W. Bush, 2001 2. Race to the Top, Barack Obama, 2009 3. Common Core Standards, Bill Gates, 2010 4. Pushing school choice (not the title of a reform, just a strategy), Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos, 2016 These disrupt--I mean reforms, to K-12 education relied on strategies of testing, competition, and punishment. If we think back over these government acts, its not too hard to imagine how we ended up with school districts which prioritize procedure, policy, and structure. Little room has been made for innovation, creativity, and collaboration. We need actual reform, not more disruptions to teaching.

Finally we are starting to see others picking up on the REAL issues behind teacher attrition crisis. This information from Gallup will be a great resource for upcoming book about teacher retention. Let's start making changes to the work environment and school leadership that encourage teachers to stay in the profession!
