Today, U.S. Representatives Larry Bucshon, MD (R-IN-08), Buddy Carter (R-GA-01), and Diana Harshbarger (R-TN-01) introduced the 340B Affording Care for Communities and Ensuring a Strong Safety-Net Act (340B ACCESS Act), a bill that makes changes to the 340B Drug Discount Pricing Program. ACH is unable to support the 340B ACCESS Act in its current form. While we strongly support Congressional efforts to address ongoing issues within the 340B Drug Discount Program, the provisions in this legislation would result in an unacceptable reduction in the value of the 340B program to health centers, which would restrain their ability to care for patients and continue expanding access to care for those most in need. A good example, of simple common sense, that Belgium would be well advised to follow at least regarding the health data storage platform and the technical architecture supporting data exchange. Creating a true SAFE interoperable health data space is enough of a challenge without adding complexity where it could be removed.

Healthcare providers are struggling to get patients to tell them about problems they face outside of the exam room. A recent article from Kara Hartnett for Modern Healthcare notes that even though a recent push from regulators has intensified efforts to screen patients for social determinants of health, many providers are still grappling with low response levels and inaccurate data.
 Understanding a person’s whole health requires trust and a relationship. Building something as important as trust doesn’t happen immediately—especially when providers are only seeing patients for short visits every few months or once a year. Trusted relationships between our members and their #PapaPals enable us to help members outside the confines of a traditional healthcare system—using information that otherwise could fall through the cracks. Insights from in-depth interviews with our #PapaPals show what they know about their members that doctors might not, and the responses were eye-opening. Several mentioned issues related to medication—either expired or disorganized prescriptions or members not taking their medicine as prescribed. One Papa Pal identified two prescriptions that should not be taken together, and worked with the member to contact their pharmacy and/or doctor to resolve it.
