People will feel more excited to execute their own ideas, rather than things you tell them to do. I've observed this with my team over the last few months. Encouraging your team to contribute data-driven ideas fosters a sense of ownership and can boost overall performance. Here are 3 things I've learned so far: 1️⃣ Create thinking space: Allow people to make time to reflect on past data. We're often so consumed in day-to-day tasks that it's easy to postpone reflection time. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕? 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓. 👇 Is it working on a team with similar people? Is it the team's purpose? Background of people in the team? To find out what truly makes some teams super effective, 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 embarked on a serious journey. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐞 was an extensive research project that 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 180 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲. The goal was to identify the key characteristics that make a team effective. To gather these insights, researchers conducted hundreds of interviews, analyzed extensive arrays of data, and reviewed each team's performance metrics. (very) Long story short, Google eventually identified the following 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 (in the order if importance, 1 being the most important aspect): 1️⃣ 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲: Team members feel safe to take risks and be open in front of each other without fear of judgment or punishment. 2️⃣ 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Everyone completes their work on time and meets the group's expectations. 3️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: Clear roles, plans, and goals. Everyone knows what they need to do and why it's important. 4️⃣ 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: The work is personally important to team members, making them more engaged and motivated. 5️⃣ 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: Team members feel that their work matters and creates positive change, giving them a sense of purpose. This photo shows a rare, unforgettable moment - the day I truly felt the power of an empowered team. I'm excited about the new direction we're taking with Beyond because of this. A while ago, in a fast-growing finance tech company, I was able to set aside a whole three months to focus on just one goal. Being able to do this was already a big deal for us 😅. We brought together five different teams for a two-day meeting. We spent that time together to dig deeper into what we wanted to do and why we were doing this, and exploring possibilities of how we could solve this challenge together. The outcome? A synergy between teams that manifested in more effective communication, a shared purpose and a drive that I hadn't felt before and haven't felt since. We kept each other updated with weekly meetings, sharing how we experimented, what we were learning, our wins and struggles. The impact was profound - not just within our company but, most importantly, for our users. It felt like we were doing what experts like Marty Cagan and John Cutler always talk about – really empowering and lining up our team. It felt great! ✨ But the question is, how can we keep this feeling going for a long time, easily, and for everyone in the company? How can we all work together really well and make a big impact? This is a huge challenge for a lot of tech companies, as I've learned in the last weeks from talking to more than 50 product leaders. There is a common theme. 👉 It's really tough, or sometimes feels impossible, to truly empower product teams. Recognizing this, with Beyond, we want to tackle this tough problem. It's about empowering and redefining the very fabric of collaboration and how we create impact as a team.
