During the ITB trade show, Amadeus' Group Environmental Officer, Lucas Bobes, took part in a panel on sustainability organized by Global Travel Tech. Some of the take-aways follow: "As opposed to other pieces of information used to make travel choices like the price of the ticket or the schedule of a flight", explained Lucas Bobes, "sustainability information is very complex and it needs to include a range of data points like aircraft efficiency, fuel consumption, emissions per passenger, impact on local communities of a certain stay, use of water, generation of waste, use of renewable energy, etc. Travel technology providers need to work together to source this comprehensive range of information together and agree on how to evaluate it, so that we can pass transparent and clear sustainability information to passengers". "In my view", he said, "we have spent a lot of time and effort to work on methodologies and obtain data to assess sustainability performance of travel options. We need not to focus on standarization. Consensus is now more important than precision in the calculations". "We are in touch, indirectly, with millions of travelers every day", he added. "We have an opportunity, and a responsibility to inform them about sustainability performance and help them make more informed choices. 2024 is the year to prioritize sustainability in business travel. 🚆 💹 According to the Travel Smart Campaign, business travel makes up 15-20% of global air travel, the most carbon-intensive form of transport. While corporate travelers represent just 12% of all airline passengers, they generate billions in airline revenue — as much as 75% on certain flights. What can we make of this? ⤵ Companies, with their significant purchasing power and leverage, are uniquely positioned to boost sustainable travel. Yet 85% of companies still lack credible plans to reduce corporate travel emissions. With a new year underway, now is the perfect time for these companies to step up their game. The way forward is collaboration with more online meetings, more travel by train and less by plane, as envisioned by Dense Auclair, Travel Smart’s corporate travel manager. These changes are not only crucial for keeping the 1.5°C goal in reach, but for benefitting businesses themselves.
