Post# 58 Here is some details about Scaling of RO plant and controlling parameters. Scaling in RO Membranes will cause the following issues in most scenarios. 1: High Operating Pressure 2: Low salt rejection 3: Higher pressure drop across/Lower flux. As scaled membranes have extra layer of scale across the membrane surface. So the feed water need an extra force to pass through the membrane causing increase in operating pressure. Increase in pressure drop is due to the cross flow resistance due to scale of feed water across the membrane surface. Salt rejection is decreased as it is a function of concentration polarization at the membrane surface. When scaling occured, high amount of salt is present at membrane surface. Salt transport is a function of salts present across the membrane surface. So with scaled membranes high amount of salt is being transported and reduced the salt rejection.
