That’s true. ✅ It is all about inequality and privilege. If I were born in Uk and a chance to study in Top tier universities, my job hunting process will be just a piece of cake. However, to my fellow international students who studying in low ranking universities, believe in your power, finding your strength, building resilience & create a culture of contionus learning. Corporate says they love diversity, but they rarely support to underrepresented people. In reality, Business don’t care about their employees well being. They only care about their performance at work. 🤷 The only effective way to express our dissatisfaction is to not accept shitty offers but employees don’t have that level of bargaining power. 😶 The is why unions and labor friendly governments are crucial for our wellbeing but the tories would whine as always.

On Monday I finished my last day at my internship site for my MPH. An assignment for class was to post about your experience in the discussion board. I was surprised to see many people did not have as great of experience as I did. Here are some thoughts for organization who have interns. 1. Do you REALLY have the capacity to have interns? This is an important part of schooling and should not be a chance for an organization to bring someone in to do "busy" work. We pay for this class. We demand you time, attention and feedback. 2. Get to know your intern. Yes, your organization has a list of things it needs done, but again, this is a "class" for students to see where they fit in the real world. Find out what their passions are and how you can best use those passions to make your organization better. 3. Think outside the box. Is there some cool conferences that you are going to? Let you intern tag along. Are there organizations that you work closely with? Connect your intern for a 1:1 with someone from that org. 4. Make this educational and fun! Yes, the intern has certain deliverables that have to be met but treat this as an "experience" rather than inexpensive labor. I was one of the lucky ones with my internship site. The first thing they did was have a 1:1 to see if I would be a good fit and then they took the time to see if they had the capacity to support me. I was able to attend multiple conferences, and not as someone that was making copies or assisting them, but was able to participate. This gave me an insight into what public health in Kansas looks like. This group of folks took the time to know what my passions and experience were in and placed me in a project that used both of those things. They made me feel valued and respected. I was given feedback and never made to feel like no one had time for me. I really feel for some of the folks in my internship group who did not get what they deserved out of this process. Someday I hope that I can be a preceptor and repeat the experience that I had so that a future intern feels that every penny spent for these credit hours was worth it!
