Yesterday marked the start of our inaugural Social Work Awareness Week. The initiative was sponsored by the Social Work Employers Forum who have come together to address shared and well-recognised challenges in the field of Social Work. To date we have senior representation from Tusla, DCEDIY, HSE, Bernardos, the Probation Service, the Disability Federation, the IASW and FORSA. We also have excellent participation and representation from across the education sector.  Our shared goal is to address the big issues facing social work in Ireland, starting with the insufficient pool of social workers nationally and the related issues of recruitment and retention. We recognise that to progress matters effectively, there are many moving parts and the issues are multidimensional. These include attracting more school-leavers onto relevant programmes, making post-graduate programmes attractive for more mature entrants, addressing issues regarding practice placements, and enabling a more diverse pool of Social Workers by broadening pathways to Social Work. Efforts by individual employers, no matter how creative and ‘successful’, only result in moving social work vacancies from one agency to another. We know and firmly believe that there are additional, positive and effective steps that can be taken. We want to maximise our collective joined-up approach, to build on what is already being done, as well as identifying gaps and joining together to address them. This collective, systemic approach is what is most likely to really unlock the solutions to the challenges we all face. Ultimately Social Workers will choose to work in their area of preference, our role is to ensure we are producing the correct numbers and enabling this hugely important profession to deliver the best possible outcomes in positive work cultures. There are very major challenges in the world, this is one we can solve collectively. The demand for social workers is reflected in the statistics. Did you know that by 2030 there will be more than 782,00 social workers in the country? This makes social work one of the fastest growing professions in the country. The theme for Social Work Month 2024 is "Empowering Social Workers," and we could not be more grateful to all social workers and the role they play in finding and getting access to the resources people need and deserve—not to mention that social workers are among the 6,000+ professionals who refer patients to us! March is National Social Work Month where social workers are celebrated for their hard work. ABC12 in Michigan spoke with Samantha Dutton who is an Associate Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Phoenix in their online news story "National Social Work Month recognizes the profession". In the news story, Samantha Dutton talks about how much work social work is and how necessary the work is. She said "The Bureau of Labor Statistics has us grow between 7 and 12 percent over 10 years, so there's lots of need for social worker." From what I see, there is a lot of room for social work in places like schools. The students at schools have a lot of needs that are not met by their regular teachers. The main problem is that a lot of the schools and programs do not have the money to support the programs or the staff. If there was more support there, there may be more people who want to do social work. It is a great profession and students need social work. But the schools and programs have to help the staff help the students. https://lnkd.in/eYJeR9V2

We recently held an event at the #Pierhead, to share our analysis and recommendations from our new research on employment support policy in #Wales.   🔎 Our research examines the future of #employment support #policy in #Wales and identifies areas where the existing system can be improved to better assist people to find good quality work, particularly those facing barriers involving poor #health and #disability.   📉 146,000 people or 7.7% of the working-age population are economically inactive due to long-term health conditions or disabilities in Wales, compared with 5.5% in England and 6.9% in Scotland. �� If Wales matched the UK employment rate, around 28,000 extra people would be in work. Employment support has a vital role to play in addressing job insecurity and in-work #poverty and making Wales a #fairwork nation.   We are calling for a shared strategy to tackle #economic inactivity. To address these issues in Wales, there needs to be a much closer partnership between the #UK and Welsh Government. Joshua Miles, Director for Wales and co-author of the report said: 🗨 “Wales has higher rates of economic inactivity and fewer people employed in the labour market. This is despite 75,000 economically inactive people in Wales wanting to work. This calls for a targeted and considered policy response from its elected representatives. However, the current support landscape is at best muddled with strategies from Welsh, UK and local government that too often compete rather than complement each other. International comparators such as the USA, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands show that we can get this right with policies that reflect local communities and drive better outcomes for all concerned.
