May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Georgia Appleseed is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of students through our School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) programs. Given the pivotal role schools play in students' lives, providing mental health support within these environments is crucial. SBBH programs address the significant rise in behavioral health disorders among American youth—a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By integrating mental health services into school settings, we remove barriers to access such as transportation and stigma, making these essential services available right where students are most comfortable. This month, we highlight the importance of these programs, which not only support individual students but also contribute to healthier, more engaged school communities. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eEKD4_Yd and help ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed and thrive. Let's make mental health support as common as the school lunch! #MentalHealthAwareness #SchoolBasedBehavioralHealth #SBBH #GeorgiaAppleseed

Leveraging the power of focused, directed, and actionable collaboration to help improve healthcare delivery, access, and experience for patients, care providers, payers and employers.
After I posted last week about the worrisome increase of adolescents and teens landing in hospital emergency departments for their mental health crises, the Law of Attraction delivered a ray of hope. Framed against the reality that there will never be enough mental health professionals available to provide help and support for so many children and teens in need with nowhere to turn, I learned about BeMe Health. As the linked article describes, BeMe is a mobile app and mental health platform that supports the mental health of all teens. Among the many aspects of BeMe that I find exciting and very encouraging is that the app and platform were developed with a lot of feedback from the BeMe Teen Advisory Board (TAB) which continues to guide its evolving features and capabilities. As the article describes, BeMe includes a self-navigable suite of activities that allows users to accept the support they need in the moment. It features interactive activities, live text-based coaching, short-form videos, and links to clinical services and crisis support. As the BeMe website points out, most teens don’t get any mental health support from the current health system. The U.S. Surgeon General recently emphasized the urgent need to address the nation’s youth mental health crisis, where 80% of youth with mental illness don’t receive treatment. While schools mandate physical education, mental health curriculum is neglected, leaving a gap in teen mental health knowledge and information. With all of the depressing news we hear about the increasing mental health challenges our children and grandchildren face, it’s uplifting to see a company using tech in a positive way to fill this gap for teens across the country. #mentalhealth #teens #healthtech #fillthegap https://lnkd.in/g--8HPwQ

President of Research and Development at Behavioral Health Link | Leveraging Data and Technology to improve 988 Crisis Response | Mental Health Equity Advocate
We're in the midst of a mental health epidemic among children and adolescents. However, some behavioral health resources are diminishing. For example, it's getting much harder to find long-term residential treatment programs. Although these programs are often the last resort for families, they're still an essential resource for kids who struggle with self-harm, severe depression, or violent outbursts. As this article by Aaron Bolton explains, this type of treatment program could be the only thing that helps certain children. In fact, short-term programs can cause some children harm. This is because they could be labeled "treatment resistant" when they actually are not—they just need long-term care. If we want to ensure children are getting the proper care they need, families need to have access to a multitude of different behavioral health resources. #LongTermCare #BehavioralHealthcare #MentalHealth

Today we opened the Behavioral Health Suite located in our Linthicum headquarters. Thanks to funding secured by Senator Pam Beidle, the suite is a welcoming, dedicated space for people to receive mental health counseling and support. After a decade of progress in mental health awareness, stigmas still persist. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities face unique challenges, often overlooked in mainstream healthcare. Founded in 1961, we have been a pioneer in addressing this gap. And in 2020, our “Coping with COVID” sessions unexpectedly revealed a strong need for deeper conversations and mental health support in the #community. Recognizing this unmet need, we launched our Behavioral Health program, offering holistic, person-centered mental health services. But despite the program's success, tailored services for people with disabilities should be a standard, not an innovation. With Cardin and Senator Beidle's help, we were able to secure $250,000 for additional clinicians and $400,000 for a welcoming Behavioral Health suite. This funding allows us to hire more clinicians and expand our reach, providing essential therapy for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As the program grows, more locations with behavioral health counseling suites will be established, ensuring accessibility for rural communities. The Arc's commitment to mental health also extends to children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, aiming to fill critical service gaps in the coming years. Declining #YouthMentalHealth is a large, growing problem in America. #Schools have a big role to play to help solve it. Young people spend more waking hours in school than anywhere else. Schools can facilitate improved access to treatment. And, when equipped with practical, evidence-based tools (like SuperBetter), schools are uniquely positioned to fill the gap for #prevention that works upstream of the problem to build skills & resources that reduce the prevalence of #anxiety & #depression. #teenmentalhealth #socialemotionallearning #resilience #studentsuccess

How are your students doing? To put it another way, how are your kids doing? The data is clear. Kids are struggling with their mental health and well-being. Why are we allowing this to continue? We print money and legislate to protect the adults of this nation, why are we allowing this to happen to our children? Our future.
Just under half — 48% — of schools say they can effectively provide mental health services to all students who need them, and only 9% of schools "strongly agree" with that statement. If students don't have access to the mental health services they need, it's incredibly challenging to achieve their full potential. The NCES gathered data from a survey of 1,683 public schools in March 2024. We affirm our mission and vision to help millions of students, educators, and school districts by creating easy access to affordable, high-quality therapy and support. #studentsuccess #mentalhealth #schoolsupport
