🌟 Exciting news! 🌟 As the Director of Innovation, I am always on the lookout for groundbreaking advancements in technology. Today, I want to share with you a fascinating report that highlights the power of artificial intelligence in combating the rising threat of AI-generated misinformation during elections. 🗳️ According to a recent report by Nextgov, hostile nation states and other malicious actors are expected to exploit the potential of AI to spread misinformation ahead of the upcoming November elections in the United States. [1] This poses a significant challenge to the integrity of our democratic processes. However, the report suggests that we can fight fire with fire by utilizing AI itself to counter these threats. 💪 The report emphasizes the importance of leveraging AI technologies to detect and debunk false information, ensuring that voters are equipped with accurate and reliable information. By harnessing the power of AI, we can effectively combat the spread of misinformation and safeguard the democratic principles that our society holds dear. 🌐 But how can we achieve this? It requires collaboration and innovation from various stakeholders, including technology companies, government agencies, and civil society organizations. By working together, we can develop sophisticated AI algorithms that can identify and flag misleading content, deepfakes, and other forms of AI-generated misinformation. 🤝 I am thrilled to see that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed a new regulation that would require the disclosure of AI use in political campaign advertising. [3] This is a crucial step towards transparency and accountability in the use of AI during elections. It will enable voters to make informed decisions and protect the integrity of our democratic processes. 📢 Furthermore, OpenAI's recent action to remove influence operations tied to Russia, China, Iran, and Israel demonstrates the commitment of technology companies to combatting the misuse of AI. [2] By proactively addressing these issues, we can create a safer and more trustworthy online environment. 👏 Now, more than ever, it is essential for us to stay vigilant and informed. Let's actively engage in discussions, share reliable information, and support initiatives that promote the responsible use of AI in elections. Together, we can ensure that our democratic processes remain fair, transparent, and free from manipulation. 🗽 #AI #ElectionIntegrity #Democracy #Transparency #Innovation #Collaboration References: [1] Google research shows the fast rise of AI-generated misinformation: https://lnkd.in/duRMkqy6 [2] In a first, OpenAI removes influence operations tied to Russia, China and Israel: https://lnkd.in/divE78de [3] 'Crucial': FCC Proposes Forcing Disclosure of AI Use in Political Ads: https://lnkd.in/dVMDh-HT

Some bright 🌞 news on this spring 💐 day 2024 has been dubbed the biggest election year in history; almost half of the 🌍 world's population is eligible to vote, with elections in 64+countries (and in the EU). Now 2️⃣ 0️⃣ tech companies signed the “Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections”. It’s is a set of commitments to deploy technology countering harmful AI-generated content meant to deceive voters. ➡ AI Elections Accord: https://lnkd.in/e-KHCfEi 🔶 Only thing is, as David Evan Harris and Larry Norden neatly point out, as of yet there are no accountability mechanism and no timelines in place for accomplishing its potentially very valuable commitments. So let’s invite all signatories: Adobe, Amazon, Anthropic, Arm, ElevenLabs, Google, IBM, Inflection AI, LinkedIn, McAfee, Meta , Microsoft, Nota, OpenAI, Snap Inc., Stability AI, TikTok, Trend Micro, Truepic, and X, to really report 🎯 on their promises made in the accord 📃 . ✴️Because after all: “Collectively, they have unleashed upon the world a set of tools and technologies that threaten, in their own words, to 'jeopardize' our democratic systems — and done so to enormous profits. At this point, the democracies of the world who may pay the biggest price need more than promises. We need accountability.” The good news? 🧡 If the companies that signed on to the accord actually deliver on their commitments, it could make a real difference to the integrity of the information environment for elections around the world in 2024. Among other things, it could increase the chances that deepfakes are discovered and blocked before they can deceive the public. More broadly, these safeguards could make it more difficult for bad actors to interfere in our elections. Participating companies agreed to 8️⃣ specific commitments: 🔸 Developing and implementing technology to mitigate risks related to Deceptive AI Election content, including open-source tools where appropriate 🔸Assessing models in scope of this accord to understand the risks they may present regarding Deceptive AI Election Content 🔸 Seeking to detect the distribution of this content on their platforms 🔸Seeking to appropriately address this content detected on their platforms 🔸Fostering cross-industry resilience to deceptive AI election content 🔸Providing transparency to the public regarding how the company addresses it 🔸Continuing to engage with a diverse set of global civil society organizations, academics 🔸Supporting efforts to foster public awareness, media literacy, and all-of-society resilience #digitalsustainability #DataSovereignty #AIAccountability #Deepfakes #elections2024 Brennan Center for Justice, Tech Legality

J.D. Candidate | Ottawa Law Review Vol. 55 | Corporate & Securities @Patrick Mak & Tse | Canada Chief of Staff @JURIST
✍ I'd like to share an article I've written for JURIST on Friday's Munich Security Conference. Here, the world's tech giants came together to sign an accord aimed at curbing the deceptive use of Artificial Intelligence in elections. This move, significant in its timing and intent, intersects with a year brimming with national elections in over 50 countries worldwide. It sets the stage for a critical examination of self-regulation's role in safeguarding democratic processes. 📄 This accord situates itself against a backdrop of tangible threats to electoral integrity, notably illustrated by recent incidents like the AI-driven robocalls that mimicked Joe Biden during New Hampshire's primary election. 🖥 The intrigue for me lies not only in whether these self-regulatory measures will prove effective but also in how we will attribute the successes and failures of these efforts. This development coincides with significant regulatory movements, like the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act, and many other governments around the world being called on to explore similar responses. All of this creates an increasingly complex tapestry of attempts to rein in the potential misuse of AI. 🛁 As I reflect on these events, I also can't help but be concerned about the daunting task ahead. With every new regulation or accord, we try to plug the holes of the metaphorical "leaking bathtub." With each leak we cover, we risk opening new and unforeseen ones. Trial and error works insofar as we can connect the effect to the error; with the immaterial nature of AI's effects, and the quantity of responses, I am not particularly sure that we'll be able to make that connection. 🌐 The Munich Security Conference may have set the stage, but it's the global community's collective actions and reflections that will determine the direction we take. As we venture into this uncertain future, it's clear that the discourse around AI and election integrity is more than just a policy debate—it's a reflection of our values and vision for the digital age.

MUST READ: CDT's Becca Branum and Tim Harper pen a new blog about recent Senate efforts to address #AI in elections. Key highlights below: The U.S. Senate Committee on Rules & Administration advanced three bills on AI in elections: the Preparing Election Administrators for AI Act, the #AI Transparency in Elections Act, and the Protect Elections from Deceptive AI Act. Each has unique strengths and challenges. The Preparing Election Administrators for AI Act, with broad bipartisan support, mandates guidelines on AI use in elections. While helpful, its effectiveness is limited by the proximity of the election. The bill's focus on generative AI and collaboration with CISA and NIST could enhance its impact. The AI Transparency in Elections Act requires AI-generated political ads to be labeled, ensuring transparency. However, its enforcement period ends on Election Day, ignoring the post-election phase's vulnerabilities. Explicit exceptions for parody and clarity on permanent labeling could improve this bill. The Protect Elections from Deceptive AI Act, the most expansive of three new bills, aims to protect candidates from materially deceptive AI media. While it seeks to safeguard public discourse, it raises constitutional, policy, and implementation concerns. https://lnkd.in/eZUx5EQN #Elections2024 #AI #Disinformation #DemocracyMatters
