"What would it look like if practicing medicine was grounded in self-love instead of self-sacrifice?" I am honored that my reflections as a physician and patient were included last month in this important health equity report from The Atlantic & Omnicom PR Group. Like so many of my fellow primary care physicians, we were drawn to the field because of our role as the first point of access into care for our communities and ability to build relationships over time. However, many of us were also trained to do this work as martyrs- under the premise that health equity comes only by sacrificing our own health & well-being. After developing a chronic illness, I came to realize that the road to better health for all cannot be built on sacrifice. Instead, better solutions come when providers find ways to practice medicine that allow them to love themselves and in turn, have the capacity to bring their best selves to their patients. This has led some of us to be creative enough to build models of care where we can tap into our gifts and build novel & impactful care models through social entrepreneurship; expanding beyond the traditional 1-on-1 provider to patient clinical visit model. This is where we can leverage entrepreneurship as a pathway to center communities in delivering health services and remove the silos that delivering just healthcare requires. Health equity is critical but we must remember it is not the goal, it is only a step. Health justice is where we must focus our attention, although it is much more challenging and complex to achieve because healthcare is only part of the solution. Then when we remove the idea that sacrifice has to be a part of these health solutions, that's when we'll really see meaningful change. #communityhealth #healthequity Special thanks to Shari Beagelman for allowing me to share my voice and ideas in this report.

From Hospitalogy: most large health systems performed better in Q1 2024 when compared to the first quarter of 2023... Utilization is up, the labor market has stabilized, and dense health system consolidators are staying ahead of the game.   The graphic is Hospitalogy's original analysis, and it’s sorted by operating margin % profitability. Any green bar means the system performed better in 2024. Any red bar signifies worse performance than a year ago - troubling.   Several players - including Tenet Healthcare, Baylor Scott & White Health, Mayo Clinic, AdventHealth, Providence, and Ascension - saw significant improvement in operating margins between the two periods. Baylor sitting at 8.7% in Q1 is particularly unreal performance. Our Healthcare Sucks! Instead of complaining, I choose to seek for solutions. Unfortunately, it can feel like be a mission impossible task. Healthy equity gaps in black and brown communities are the key factors to the poor healthcare outcomes. Yet, I believe there’s simple and practical ways to bridge the gap. The answer starts with the origin ( foundation) and then to the systems ( processes ). The healthcare structure and culture was NEVER designed for us, so how can it SERVE us!? It can’t!!! I founded DiscoverU Health to address Health Equity challenges affecting Black and Brown individuals and communities. My motivation is rooted in purpose and impact. I’ll be committed to following: 1. At a time when countries (like France) with a very strong historical record in #healthcare are suddenly struggling with the deterioration of many aspects of the system, this post by Henry Mintzberg is a good reminder that healthcare may be a #public_good but it cannot be managed like a public company. Of even more interest to those of us working in #organization_development and #leadership_development, Mintzberg makes the innovative point that services like this need to be managed not only with good #leadership but also with a strong sense of #communityship.
