Check out the latest research on the importance of integrating trophic cascades into coastal ecosystem restoration published in Springer Nature Group Nature Communications! My coauthors and I, including Chunming Li, Jianshe Chen, Xiaolin Liao, Christine Angelini, Lingli Liu, Brian Silliman, Mark Bertness, and Qiang He, show how seabirds and their nonconsumptive effects (i.e., the ecology of fear) are critical to controlling populations of grazing crabs that would otherwise decimate transplanted marsh grasses. This video shows exactly what happens when traditional salt marsh restoration via planting is attempted in the absence of seabirds (and their NCEs) in the Yellow Sea.
