When I was hired at the Ralston Public Library I had no experience or industry knowledge of the Public Library sector. In fact, I applied for an entry level desk clerk job. My interview with the Assistant Director and Youth Service Librarian went well. They asked me the typical questions; can you tell us about a time you overcame adversity, what is your biggest strength, biggest weakness; and then, I was asked how I might handle a large group of children that is not listening, and what kind of activities I would plan for a group of 13-18 year olds. Reaching the end of the interview I was given the floor for questions on the position. Having been asked about childrens activities and not having read that in the job description for desk clerk I asked when childrens programming would be under my purview. Laughs, smiles, then confusion met my interviewers faces. After phone conversations and application submittal, I had been slotted for an interview as the Youth Librarian Assistant role instead of the Desk Clerk role to their realization that I had not been notified of he change they elaborated, “We thought that you would fit in as a leader with the youth in the community. We can train you on the software and how the industry works, but finding the right person for our community is more important.” They were right. I fit like a glove and I learned fast. There were many days and nights that I worried over programs, plans, collection development, and the politics that have a strangle hold over public service. I was quite overhwhelmed at times that they might have made the wrong choice choosing someone who had everything to learn about libraries. But, then the moments where I was indeed the right person come to mind. The moment when most others had written off a difficult young boy, but all I saw was someone who was filling the expectations of those burnt-out adults. I gave him new expectations; to be a leader, to be kind, to use his voice to gather friends and debate instead of yell. Given new expectations and opportunities one can rise and exceed what was once thought to be our limit.
