We won best internal communications campaign! It's thanks to amazing work from the brilliant team (including Lisa Bergin, Nicola Leonard, Ellie Harriss, Paul Tallant and Jo Hatfield) for their work to engage so many colleagues with our new recognition and benefits platform, Vivup. ✨ I've been reflecting on why this campaign was such a success and what we can learn for the future. It's back to basics but I think there's real value in remembering not to skip these important steps: 📌 Clearly defined roles and responsibilities. The small matrix team worked collaboratively to draw on each other's respective expertise. 📌 SMART objectives. We articulated what success would look like from the outset so we could easily monitor how things were going and whether we were on track. 📌 Genuine engagement. We proactively sought feedback from lots of different stakeholders well before launch, enabling the project team to respond to ideas and questions and create real excitement for the initiative before we went live. I'll be keeping these in mind as we embark on new projects and I'm excited for what we'll achieve next 🙌

Four Months In: From Agency PR to Internal Comms Four months ago, my career took a sharp turn: I left the vast world of a global corporate agency to steer the internal comms for a smaller, close-knit team. Was I scared? Absolutely. The change in scale was immense—going from international campaigns to intimate, team-focused communications felt like moving from an ocean liner to a sailing boat. The First Day – Nervous? More than ever. Stepping into the office, the weight of “new beginnings” hit me like a ton of bricks. It wasn't just a new desk. It was a whole new world of responsibilities and unspoken rules. First Month – The steep learning curve felt more like a vertical climb. Every task I completed came with a side of doubt, but slowly, I started turning the small wins into routines. Month Two and Three – Confidence began to sneak in. My voice found its place in meetings where I once only listened. I launched our monthly newsletter, and guess what? People didn’t just read it; they waited for it. Today – Four months in, and I'm crafting strategies, not just content. The wins? Still small, but they're stacking up. And that jittery newcomer? Turns out, she was just finding her footing. This journey has been one of the most daunting transitions of my professional life, but every challenging moment has been a stepping stone to a victory, however small. Here’s to more learning, more growth, and more tiny triumphs that lead to big changes.

People are always surprised by how small the marketing team is at Chili Piper. And it's a compliment. Last week, one of our partners (a unicorn company you all know and most use) thought our marketing team was as big as theirs (50+ people in marketing). When I talked to a different partner about our big launch this week, his jaw hit the floor when I told him how small we are. Our marketing team is currently 3 people (Tara, Madeleine and me), and one of them is out on maternity leave. Yes, we do have some open headcount, and yes, it was a bigger team in the past, but we get a LOT done for a lean team. How? Everyone is given a lot of freedom and autonomy. We hire great operators (not armchair generals) who are great at many things. We have great partners and contractors to help multiply our work. We have a culture of growth, learning and experimentation. We have a bias towards action. There's very minimal politicking at work. There's a lot of transparency and trust with information so that everyone has what they need to move fast and make great decisions. There's a focus on (and training around) good communication, feedback and conflict resolution. We have fun at work!

As new graduates seek great places to work in times of turmoil, brands are using their own young employees in campaigns to attract and recruit Gen Z employees.. 2 EXAMPLES: Chipotle is looking to recruit potential Gen Z employees for its fall season — wanting to fill more than 7K open positions in the US — and has started to highlight its employees with its short form content. “It’s important to show the love our employees have for our brand and what they do every day, genuine culinary passion of the employees is unlikely to be replicated by actors. The way that we source it, the way they cook it, that’s more than what a script can do.” JetBlue is highlighting its employees by leveraging viral hashtags on TikTok and IG. “We’ve got lots of content that we should be generating ourselves — over 24,000 crew members who are very keen to help and support and be part of TikTok so I think that’s why you’ll see us first.” COMPENSATION? Should (and how) can these young ‘creator’ employees best be compensated as this practice becomes the norm for younger generations? SO WHAT? Candidates who represent the brand’s promise will likely result in higher quality candidates, less time to hire, and greater retention - all for lower cost than a standard advertising campaign. How would you describe your company culture? ➡️ Supportive - StaffBuffalo is very team-focused and we all work hard together to give our clients the best our services have to offer. What is one thing you wish people knew about your job? Not only does my role involve creating and implementing marketing strategies for Staffbuffalo and HRBuffalo, but I also produce content for several of our clients. This involves devising and executing different marketing strategies tailored to each company's unique offerings. My main goal is to increase brand visibility, and attract quality candidates to our client's business. What is the most interesting project you've worked on here? It’s difficult to pick just one. Working with a diverse range of clients across different industries is always interesting! It presents the challenge of adapting my marketing strategy to suit each unique field, but it's also exciting to learn about new industries and companies, especially those based in Buffalo, NY. Since working here, I have gained invaluable knowledge about the City of Buffalo and its businesses. What are some of your favorite hobbies? During the warmer months in Western New York, I thoroughly enjoy venturing out to nature reserves and hiking trails. I love all things antique and vintage and frequently browse thrift stores to add to my collection. Because we learned that focusing on select, and more impactful marketing partnerships versus numerous 😅, smaller events, was crucial for maximizing impact and resource efficiency. By consolidating efforts into strategically planned initiatives - special mix of large, medium and intimate events- we can create a stronger and more memorable brand presence, while avoiding team burn-out.
