Nearly 6.6 million individuals reside in refugee camps, yet out of 200,000 students ready to enroll in higher education, only a select few will get the opportunity—a stark reminder of the need for accessible education. Despite our progress, we still have work to do to meet the U.N. Refugee Agency’s goal of providing higher education access to at least 15% of refugees by 2030. Last month, in my OpEd in @TheHill, I proposed that to help us meet these goals, every country should devote 1 percent of its GDP, and the world’s nearly 3,000 billionaires make a one-time contribution of $1 million. This #WorldRefugeeDay, join me and my colleagues at #IIEHonors this evening at 6:30 pm ET for a virtual event celebrating the contributions and resilience of scholars, students, and artists who have been forcibly displaced. The #IIEGoldbergPrize is a testament to the vision of what courageous individuals working together can actually achieve. Courage and compassion underlie all that Ghadir Hani and Dror Rubin and our past laureates have done. During these difficult times, we look to these courageous and compassionate individuals as rays of hope. https://lnkd.in/dUP8p39Y

#IIEHonors was an evening to remember. We witnessed the resilience, bravery, and strength of IIE program participants and grantees. The need for these programs is critical, and incredible transformation is possible when our donors, supporters, and staff empower IIE changemakers to change the world. #PowerofIIE @IIEGlobal

It has been an active and full week for IIE. Thank you to the guest speakers and our friends at DAAD German Academic Exchange Service for co-hosting our follow-up Transatlantic High-Level Roundtable in Washington, D.C. In a continuation of our first dialogue in Brussels last fall, experts from academia, business, and government convened to explore a common E.U.-U.S. framework in higher education and discuss the expansion of equity and access programs and exchanges between the two regions. We are facing an unprecedented number of refugees and displaced persons, with UN estimates projecting more than 200 million by 2050. Educational opportunities for refugees are incredibly scarce – only 7%have access to higher education, well below the global average of 40%. If this trend continues, we will have a lost generation of talented young people who are desperately needed around the world. In The Hill, I advocate for a new incentive structure to recognize the refugees among us as critical to our collective future: https://lnkd.in/dwDUG3zR

Thank you to the DAAD Alumni Association USA and Manfred Philipp for bestowing me with the Lifetime Achievement Award for International Exchange. I am lucky to share this award with Mary Ellen Schmider, Former President & Executive Director of the Fulbright Association and be in the company of David Gill, Consul General of Germany who received the award for Outstanding Achievements in Fostering Transatlantic Relations. It was a special evening, and I accepted the award on behalf of my IIE colleagues who are DAAD and Fulbright Alumni.
