Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2024.
Another brilliant visit to feed those curiosities around advertising.
There is always something new to learn and this year connections were as powerful a theme as ever.
Connections between art and science using tech (no surprise AI), connections between consumers and the constellation of media touchpoints at our finger tips and human connections remaining potent.

Thanks to DJ Rakim on sharing his views on why it’s important to have ‘Women Shaping Spaces’ in the music industry and DJ-ing, when visiting the Women of the NEB Exhibition recently.
The New European Bauhaus prides itself on taking an interdisciplinary approach. With bringing those working in various fields together from the creative industries of Artists, Designers, Musicians, Architects to Scientists and those working in the Built and Urban Environments.
It’s important to consider the NEB values #Inclusive, #Sustainable and #Beautiful. #Diversity and Inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are essential pillars for fostering innovation and representation within the #creativeindustries, particularly in the #musicindustry. Elevating diverse and #intersectional#women to #leadership positions is crucial for amplifying a broader range of voices and perspectives, enriching the artistic landscape and challenging stereotypes.
In the realm of female DJs, this means not only celebrating their unique contributions to music but also addressing the pervasive issue of harassment and violence they encounter, especially within the night-time economy. By placing diverse women in leadership roles, we can enact #policies to prioritize safety and create environments where all individuals feel empowered to express themselves freely.
Moreover, having diverse women in leadership enables a more nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by female DJs, leading to more effective advocacy and support initiatives. By amplifying their voices and experiences, we can work towards dismantling systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality and discrimination. This approach fosters a more equitable and safer environment for everyone involved in the music industry, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of gender or background, can fully participate and thrive in creative endeavors.
Thank you to #DJRakim for visiting #WomenoftheNEB Exhibition during the #NEBFestival last week.

10 days ago, on December 8th, I presented my Qualifying Project for FIT Exhibition and Experience Design MA, The Rainbow Connection, an exhibition designed to foster empathy and connectivity within the Queer community.
It's different from any exhibition you've ever been to. How?
First, it's participatory, meaning you, the attendee are part of the exhibition. This is increasingly common, yet still not at all the norm.
Secondly, it's dialogic. Sharing your personal stories and listening to others is part of the experience. This has been done before but is exceedingly rare.
Finally, and most importantly, it's for the Queer Community at large, and for that reason is not in a museum or a gallery!
Curious? Have a look!
Still not convinced? Ask me to see the 200+ page thesis book. I have the supporting research.
For the last 2 years I've been out to prove design can be meaningful and impactful to society, and here we are. I couldn't be prouder.

Soil and Water Conservation for Sustainable Food Production, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem services of natural resources should be given top priority in the prevalent climatic anomaly related disaster management in all types of land uses. This approach of land use management will be helpful for reducing unusual anthropogenic pressures on natural resources. Thus, it will be helpful for achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. So, present agricultural research and field works should be targeted on application of soil and water conservation methods in individual agricultural plots and further development of Soil and Water Conservation as a full-fledged stream of science.

This is the kind of tangible Inclusion focused action steps and strategies we need to push back on all the “anti woke rhetoric, anti DEI”efforts being pushed to discourage the dismantling of systemic, structural and institutional barriers that prevent true racial equality and equity.

How Feminist Media Changed the World?
Join us at the Toronto premiere of "Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World", formerly "Before #MeToo" (93 mins., Canada 2023), on Sunday Sept 17, 9 PM at the Paradise Theatre, 1006 Bloor St W, part of the Toronto Independent Film Festival.
This feature-length documentary traces the rise and fall of analogue feminist communications that preceded the MeToo era. From Halifax to Vancouver, feminist storytellers of the 1970s to 90s took hold of cutting-edge media technology to document everything from violence towards women, to how to insert a diaphragm. You’ll hear from feminist rock stars like Studio D’s Bonnie Sherr Klein (Montreal/Vancouver) and Sylvia D. Hamilton (Halifax); print collectives like Press Gang (Vancouver) and Our Lives: Black Women’s Newspaper(Toronto). Zainub Verjee tells the story of Canada’s first women of colour film festival; Nora Randall describes what it meant to create Pedestal, first feminist newspaper in Canada. Rare archival footage, like 70's feminist gatherings in Montreal, lead to the film’s climax: draconian cutbacks to women’s and lesbian organizations across Canada, following the massacre of feminists at École Polytechnique in Montreal, (December 6, 1989). The film concludes with a resurgence: younger BIPOC feminists (Ella Cooper, Black Women Film!; Didhood Collective), using analogue strategies to create new feminist digital networks.

In an era where inclusivity is paramount, integrating audio description into television advertising is not just a gesture, but a necessity. Audio description ensures that visually impaired individuals can fully engage with content, capturing the essence and details of advertisements that would otherwise be missed.
By implementing audio descriptions, brands not only demonstrate social responsibility but also expand their reach, resonating with a broader audience. It's a win-win: fostering inclusivity while enhancing brand loyalty and market penetration. Let's champion accessibility in all media, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the richness of our stories.
I'm proud to announce the launch of XR’s first-ever Global Advertising Accessibility Index & Trends Report! This comprehensive research uncovers key insights into the current state of advertising accessibility worldwide, highlighting trends and opportunities for making our ads more inclusive.

My recent policy piece focussed on women who lead the way in arts and culture for urban regeneration, following the British Council’s recent conference, Taking Place.

More Power to Women
Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s directive to ‘fight for the things that you care about but do it in a way that leads others to join you’ serves as a crucial guiding principle, particularly for leaders in the arts who possess the authority to influence policy for urban regeneration. As an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in the US, Ginsburg was a trailblazer for human rights, advocating for marginalised communities and women across the world. During my time in India, I had the privilege of meeting numerous exemplary women in positions of power within the cultural sphere, diligently addressing inequalities with similar adept leadership and an inclusive approach to garner support.
The recently published British Council research delves into India’s culture and creative industries and spotlights women in the arts. The study highlights their entrepreneurial endeavours and examines the gender dynamics within the sector. While accentuating success stories, it also deliberates on potential solutions to the many challenges encountered by women. India’s G20 presidency in 2023 underscored the intrinsic connection between gender equality, cultural heritage, livelihoods, and sustainability, all directed towards fostering inclusive growth in alignment with UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
