It is important that we are all ‘singing off the same hymn sheet’ and addressing together as a team, any issues or problems that may have arisen so that we can smooth them out as a team. The post below isn't a PR stint. We had the privilege of being part of Mumba Kenneth Kalifungwa's birthday celebrations last month. He clocked a milestone age and celebrated it with close family and friends. Kenneth's leadership journey has always fascinated me. He is an exemplary leader. It is said that the ideal employee or leader is the right balance of technical competence and character competence. I can speak to his character competence. Kenneth pays the price. It was good to observe what leadership looks like on a family front. The tributes of his father, wife, children, friends and colleagues (who have now become friends) evidenced that the man applies leadership principles at work as well as at home. He leads his family. He has individual and collective relationships with them. I observed too, that every time I encounter Kenneth, he has become a better version of himself. These improvements are often subtle and can often be missed but they are there. He has grown in grace. This kind of progressive development doesn't just happen, there is tremendous discipline, deliberateness and dying to self that takes place internally. We don't just become. Behold, a role model.

🤗 It's time to embrace simplicity 🤗 Food got complicated. We chefs are proud of all we've learned to do. And we're really happy to share that with you. Some of that 💩's pretty cool and took us a long time to learn But gone are the days where we have giant brigades paid peanuts to spend all day breaking a tomato down into its respective parts and treating them all differently. And I'm going to go out on a limb here and say guests aren't looking for it either. When making things from scratch, ask yourself: - Will my guests appreciate all the work I'm putting into this? - Are the labour and energy costs behind this preparation worth it? - Can this be done consistently by everyone in the team? - Could a reputable supplier help with this process? A team dinner? Yes and no. It was 10:30am, all the gang in a fair bit earlier than usual but all there for a reason. Cook off. I have previously done a post about how much I love cook offs but it really encapsulates everything that I love about coaching and team engagement. It gives us the opportunity to see how our colleagues are in a professional environment that isn’t the same as our day to day job. -From a coaching perspective you get to see new strengths and opportunities for growth. -From a hungry perspective you get to eat some yummy food. -From a team perspective, it’s a chance to learn, realign our values and socialise with one another in a work environment. It’s a win win win. There is so much more to it but I would be here all day. I was recently watching MasterChef The Professionals UK where the final 3 chefs visited Alchemist in Copenhagen and were put through their paces by chef-owner Rasmus Munk. I was amazed by how Alchemist is trying to revolutionise the entire restaurant experience: 🥗 His restaurant doesn’t have dishes, instead it has impressions.   📽 Dinner is divided into acts and set across several locations.   📔 Each impression has a story; from edible plastic to a chocolate bar shaped like a coffin. For me, this is the height of innovation and something all companies should strive for – redefine your industry and challenge established norms. It’s challenging, and the less trodden path of innovation will always be the risky (and often uncomfortable) way to go. But if successful then you can create something extremely special. Woodhurst have always championed a flat hierarchy which encourages our employees to do more than they’d traditionally be able to do at larger more hierarchical companies. Yesterday, we launched our new structure and career development framework which will provide the guardrails for our employees to develop at pace within their careers. I’m not going to pretend that we’re revolutionising the industry like Rasmus has at Alchemist. However, we like to think about things differently and challenge the status quo which is what we’ve done with this approach.
