Vice President of Dispute Resolution/Corporate Counsel | Strategic In-House Attorney | Trusted Legal Advisor | Girl Dad

I’m delighted to share that I have joined Progress Residential® as in house counsel. Progress, owned by Pretium, is a specialized real estate and asset management platform and one of the largest providers of single family rental homes in the United States. In addition to working with an innovative and rapidly growing organization, I also have the absolute pleasure of working with Ama Romaine, Lynn Wilson, Harish Ramalingam and others. I want to thank Thompson Coburn LLP for an incredible few years and I will miss working with so many great attorneys. I especially want to thank Nicole Williams for her leadership and mentorship during my time at TC. I also want to thank my mentors for their unwavering support. I don’t take for granted the time (including my random early morning FaceTime calls) and guidance you share with me. I am so blessed to have you all in my life and and I wouldn’t be half of the attorney, husband, and person I am without you all. I’m excited for this next step in my career. To my GC/in house friends, share one piece of helpful advice that you wish you knew earlier regarding working in house. If I haven’t already, I’ll be reaching out soon with all of my questions. Here’s to the next step in the journey!

So happy for you as you transition into this new phase of your legal journey. My one bit of advice: listen more than you speak and realize that now that you’re in-house counsel, you can advise on the risks but it’s ultimately up to the business on whether they’ll take those risks even if you are not inclined to do so. Applying black letter law to business issues does not always come with a cookie cutter solution so you must get creative and roll up your sleeves with your business partners to be the best business partner because that’s what you are now—not just an attorney! Well wishes to you.

Hello, I am Deidra Phifer and I have a problem right now with progress residential, we were advised that our lease could not be renewed when it run out in September. When I asked why not a lady from the Charlotte NC office advised me of a new changed that your company came up with I advised her that it was not in the lease we signed. I also advised that I have a different job now and it would not be problem to be on time but your company doesn't care. We have lived here for about five years. And things go rough for a minute but we are back on track. My husband have been in and out of the hospital and I had to change jobs. We even asked if they could just draft it out our account from now on buy you guys are so set on ending our lease. You have some one name Jennifer states about getting people in houses at the same time you guys are trying to put us out our home for about 5 years. But you guys are delighted to join them WOW what a company.

Congratulations fam and welcome to the in-house side! The best piece of advice I can give you is to always consider the entire organization when giving legal advice. Most times when an attorney is presented with a legal issue he/she will only address the issue presented. However, a great attorney considers how the advice he/she gives can affect other departments and employees. Doing so will help you to address operational issues and issue spot other legal issues coming down the pipeline. Good luck and I’m here if you need anything.

Congrats, my brother! This makes me smile. I think you have all the tools to succeed; natural ability and incredible work ethic. Keys to success- develop a trust-filled and collaborative dynamic with your business clients. This is something I know you did well in your previous roles, so lean into that in your new one. You will shine. All blessings towards you and the fam.
