Celebrating my one year anniversary of making a career switch from journalist to research analyst 🙌 This year I've had the chance to roll up my sleeves and get involved in building new tools and data sets to help our clients understand the fintech market better, write an 8000-word paper on a topic close to my heart (cross border payments and remittances) and meet with CEOs and founders from all across the fintech ecosystem. No exaggeration to say that I've enjoyed every day of it 😊 I want to say a big thank you to my manager Jordan McKee for hiring me, and to our in-house career coach Abhijit Bhattacharya for helping me to take the plunge and grab this opportunity. And a heartfelt thank you to all of you in the fintech industry who have taken the time to share your knowledge and contacts with me. Engaging with analysts is part of the job for many of you, but there are those who have gone above and beyond to hop on a call at short notice to explain a complex bit of tech or regulation, or the inside track about what's happening at company x or y, who have popped a book in the post to me, who have met up for breakfast or swung by S&P Towers to share tips about industry goings-on. This spirit of collaboration, plus intellectual openness and willingness to debate and discuss problems, and to do things differently, is why I love the fintech community ❤️ And it's how we leave the financial system (and hopefully the world) a little bit better than we found it 🌐 🕊

I'm excited to share that I got promoted at SUN and will relocate to Philadelphia to join the Trading & Risk team as a data scientist. After 2,000+ hours of coding, I've learned it's easy to mislead with data. Cherry-picking rows to add or drop, calculating misleading percentages, overemphasizing statistical significance, and misrepresenting visuals can create mathematically correct but practically misleading insights. Lying with data is easy; what's difficult is pairing the right questions with sound statistical methods. So here's a better approach: 1) define the problem, 2) reframe the problem through different perspectives (how does this problem look for different teams?), 3) construct a hypothesis, 4) select a method, 5) acknowledge the method's limitations and assumptions, 6) test results, and 7) decide to maintain or change your view based on the evidence. I'm happy to work for a company that promotes intellectual honesty and can't wait to give my all in my new role! 😊

The job search can feel like a rollercoaster ride... Full of ups and downs Wins and losses Progress and setbacks It's easy to feel like you're just along for the ride. But you're actually in the driver's seat. You control where this goes next. - You can decide when to reach out and connect with people - You can choose how much value to provide - You get to forge your own path, even if it's not typical (in fact, this is probably the best strategy) It won't always be easy. But you've got this. You might not land the first, or the second, or the third interview you take... but you WILL land one eventually if you keep doing the work and staying open-minded to new possibilities.
