The UK Labour Party is betting on the Energy Profits Levy (EPL) to finance its #greenspending plan, including #hydrogen and #CCUS projects. However, the potential changes to the EPL coupled with the party's promise to end new #oilandgas licensing on the UK Continental Shelf could result in lower offshore activity, further limiting tax receipts from the upstream industry and compromising the Labour Party's decarbonization commitments. #Labour leader #KeirStarmer said if the party wins the #GeneralElection expected next year it will provide £2.5 billion of subsidies for companies to create jobs in #RenewableTechnologies for #NorthSea workers. The three technologies to get funding would be #GreenHydrogen, floating #WindFarms and #CarbonCapture for ongoing #OilandGas use. Executives from 20 #energy companies, including #Shell and #BP, attended a roundtable in Aberdeen with #SirKeirStarmer, shadow climate secretary #EdMiliband and several senior members of #ScottishLabour. #Starmer was reported by the #Guardian to have argued that #oil and #gas will still be used to supply energy for the UK, but that the government would need to work with industry and unions to shift more quickly towards #ZeroCarbon technologies. So this is it - the day of the UK General election. An important day for the UK and for the people in our sector across the country. We’ve set out what we think is important in our industry manifesto, which calls on all parties and candidates to choose a homegrown energy transition and back our sector. The opportunities in a homegrown energy transition are inspiring. Delivering economic growth, skilled jobs, energy security all while delivering our climate goals. We will only achieve this with supportive Government policy. Policy that makes the most of our existing industries, builds on our strengths, and ensures that the UK is the place globally for energy investment. So, when you cast your vote today, think hard about the people whose future will be shaped by our next government. Let’s hold all candidates to support UK industry and our sector. Choose a homegrown energy transition. Keir Starmer Rishi Sunak
On the eve of poll the Independent and other outlets carry a message from our chief executive David Whitehouse to Labour to deliver on assurances to engage with industry if elected to government. He said: “We have the future offshore energy industry right here on our doorsteps. From Newcastle to Cardiff to Aberdeen, these people deserve to be part of decisions impacting this industry.” Read more:

Energy is a battleground issue in the UK election, with the Labour Party's promise of a new publicly-owned energy company at the heart of the debate. But how would GB Energy work? Could it really bring down prices for consumers? And what might it mean for Scotland in particular -- where the debate is raging most fiercely? Sussex Energy Group Co-Director Matthew Lockwood has a really thoughtful piece of analysis about this out in The Herald Scotland. As expected: HUGE landslide for the Labour Party 🔴🔴🔴 With Labour's historic majority, significant changes are expected in the UK’s energy policy, balancing ambitious climate goals with economic pragmatism. Key policies include halting new North Sea exploration licenses and increasing windfall taxes on energy profits. The Energy Independence Act will aim to decarbonize the UK’s power grid by 2030, and reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports. However, Labour faces fiscal constraints and political challenges, particularly in regions reliant on the oil and gas industry. The success of these policies will require careful navigation of competing priorities to achieve both decarbonization and energy independence. Labour UK Offshore Wind Target Criticised by Jan De Nul Chief As Labour is poised for a potential victory in the upcoming UK elections, their ambitious goal of installing 60GW of offshore wind by 2030 is facing skepticism. Jan De Nul's, UK manager expressed doubts about the feasibility of this target, citing significant challenges in the supply chain. 🔍 Industry Concerns: At the RenewableUK Global Offshore Wind summit in Manchester, Labour's would-be energy secretary, Ed Miliband, reiterated plans to make the UK a "clean energy superpower." However, the industry is cautious about the practicality of these goals, especially with the current strain on installation vessels due to turbine supersizing. 🌍 Labour's Commitments: Reverse Moratorium: Miliband plans to reverse the ban costing taxpayers GBP 5m annually. Streamline Processes: Labour aims to expedite planning and application processes for offshore wind projects. Mobilize Government: A commitment to resolve delays and blockages in decision-making across government. "If Labour wins the election we will mobilise right across government to deliver our mission," said Miliband. He highlighted the consistent feedback from businesses regarding prolonged consultations and unresolved decisions within Whitehall. What do you think, are Labour's targets achievable? #RenewableEnergy #OffshoreWind #CleanEnergy #LabourParty #UKEnergy #Sustainability #GlobalOffshoreWind #EnergyTransition

Top stories today ⚡ Labour would hand FSO greater powers https://buff.ly/3PRgI3y A Labour government would hand greater powers to the Future Systems Operator (FSO) and give its public-owned GB Energy company scope to be lead investor on projects, Alan Whitehead has revealed. In a fringe meeting at The Labour Party Conference, the shadow energy security minister fleshed out the opposition’s reformation plans for the sector while ruling out nationalisation. 💧 Customer support low for decarbonising water industry https://buff.ly/45s5to3 Despite low customer support in decarbonising water assets, the sector has proposed spending £1.3 billion in the next asset management period (AMP8) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as it works towards operational net zero in 2030 and true net zero by 2050. Utility Week unpicks each company's PR24 business plan to see where the proposed investment will be spent. ❌ Mass electric heating is ‘delusional’, says union boss https://buff.ly/48RePNa Mass electrification of home heating has been branded “nonsense” and “delusional” by the leader of the UK’s third biggest union. This article discusses: Opposition leader Keir Starmer has significantly reduced his commitment to spend $35 billion annually on transitioning the UK to green energy, now allocating just $5.9 billion for this purpose. This dramatic cut comes amid attacks from the Conservative Party. The decision raises questions about the Labour party's commitment to tackling climate change as well as the UK's overall green energy transition plans. In light of these changes, one might ask: What implications might this considerable reduction in green energy funding have on the UK's ability to achieve its environmental targets? #UKPolitics #GreenEnergy #ClimateChange https://lnkd.in/ghQPxv-m https://lnkd.in/gDAi9y_c ---------------------------------- Go Rogue and focus on the WHY on Energy Markets…. This doesn’t sound great for the longevity of UKCS exploration and production of #oil & #gas. <sounds of investors running for the hills> Not quite sure what the endgame is here - close down the UKCS prematurely, import more gas from Norway, hope they’ll produce enough of that for us, write off the negative impact on UK GDP and applaud the (apparent) reduction in UK emissions and claim it as some sort of climate activist “win” 🤷♂️🤔 Sure we need to develop renewables at scale and pace and tackle demand, but we still need oil and gas in #energytransition for decades in every viable pathway, and an environment where we produce it close to home here in the UK will always make sense. Anything that rails against that really doesn’t. https://lnkd.in/ekQ9_BbP Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce Energy Voice #windfalltax

Absolutely shocking times in Westminster. Grateful to Offshore Energies UK and David Whitehouse for all they are doing to drive fact based and pragmatic dialogue at this critical point for our Oil and Gas industry, an industry that is key to ensure a successful energy transition! As David says.. “Labour either can’t do the maths or haven’t considered the alarming jobs impact that will be felt up and down the country. With no new investment, 42,000 jobs will go, and we could start to see the effects as early as this year. These are not faceless numbers but decent, hardworking people working across the UK to provide the energy we will need today and in the future. “The impact of no new investment will be felt across the whole economy – today we estimate the UK will lose £26 billion of economic value. It will undermine the very industry which can and must play a critical role in delivering a homegrown energy transition."
