Good thread by the director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's Rasmus Kleis Nielsen - on X [link in the comments] about the Greek government's "attempt to combat the spread of lies about the country" Copying from Kathimerini English Edition [link in the comments] "The ministries of Foreign Affairs and Digital Governance are reportedly preparing to launch a new digital platform that will use AI to identify false news harming the country’s interests and take the appropriate steps to refute it." If #Greece's government and Dimitris Papastergiou want to battle fake news because of the #DigitalServicesAct there's no need for need for new software or AI. Here are some practical ideas that could be done within the next months. • Add someone with a media/journalism background to the "High-Level Advisory Committee for Artificial Intelligence (AI)" - so far, there's none. • Use the tools provided by the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory (MedDMO) - I think that Symeon Papadopoulos & Nikos Sarris would be happy to help. • Check in with the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) - I can make the intros. • Ask Vasilis Vasilopoulos [link to his excellent book in the comments] to join the effort :) • And last but not least, HIRE JOURNALISTS! Boost fact-checking activities, cut the stipends to digital media spreading misinformation & lies and FUND QUALITY JOURNALISM! #factchecking #innovation #fakenews #greece #dsa

https://lnkd.in/gBtfkqSR Digital Archives of Refugees’ Self-Representation is a digital archive of self-represented audiovisual media that attempts to diversify journalistic practices by recentering the agency of those traditionally excluded from humanitarian discourse pertinent to the U.S.-Mexico border. We will be investigating how migrants use social media to share their stories, uncover which groups of migrants don’t, and work with translation and transcription software and local community organizations to increase marginalized communities’ accessibility to storytelling technology. In that process, they investigate what long-term consent of data can mean in a seemingly permanent digital space for individuals in legally precarious circumstances whose needs can change.

#NewPublicationAlert2024: So, elated to share the news about the #publication of our paper on ethical journalism in the digital age with my PhD student, Itai Zviyita. The paper looks at some of the teething #ethical conundrums bedeviling the #operations of hybrid media #organisations in #Namibia. It sheds light on the #dilemmas that editors and journalists are navigating in an environment characterised by rapid #platformisation, #digitisation and #datafication of news work. It argues that ethical #reformation and #reimagination is highly #recommended so that public interest #journalism is not sacrificed on the altar of clickbait, the race to be the first with the news and #digital first #strategies.

Reporting from a war zone is challenging. Documenting conflicts is core to informing the public but has implications for a journalist's personal safety and mental health. It requires careful planning, ethical considerations, and a commitment to accuracy. There's so much to consider. We have to get it right. 'For the Record: How to Document Stories from a War Zone' is a new training course devised by Eurovision News, working with Thomson Foundation and EBU Academy. It aims to equip journalists in the field and in newsrooms with the skills to accurately report on what they see. And it's free of charge for all journalists! The poster up on my bedroom wall during my childhood said "WAR IS NOT HEALTHY FOR CHILDREN AND OTHER LIVING THINGS". And yet sadly, my peace-loving soul knows we must tell the stories of war. The war journalists I know, including Albert Lewitinn and Benjamin Hall, are among the bravest of humans. I also mentor military veterans, and understand the difference between fighting in the war and fighting for the freedom to tell the stories of war. Here is an interesting guide to reporting on and from conflict zones.
