This is partly driven by the ever-expanding role of the CFO beyond the finance function. Over the past decade in particular, the role of the traditional accountant has expanded to take in more responsibilities in everything from corporate strategy and deal activity to sustainability and data analytics. I would also like to think that CFOs have to view business models in a more quantitative(financial) which requires observing things from different perspectives and actual dimensions. This gives them a deepened understanding of the company and and advantage over others. Furthermore, I think financially trained professionals tend to have a deeper level of understanding the risk and return dynamics that plays out in the market and economy.

There are no hard and fast rules and there is no one size fits all models for effective governance and management. It is depending on industry sector and on individual. Statistics in this case seems to be a journalistic tool indeed.
