I retired nearly 2yrs ago after a fulfilling 25-year career spanning in Law Enforcement. During this period, In these almost 2yrs I deliberately took time to reflect, rest, and embark on a journey of self-reinvention. I felt that I was no longer the same person I was before my law enforcement career. In the realm of law enforcement, we, as officers, bear witness to extraordinary events that most individuals should never have to experience. We navigate through situations that demand a delicate balance between discussing openly and compartmentalizing certain aspects. The high standards expected of us on the job often make it feel as though we must suppress our humanity, emotions, and feelings. Juggling the demands of family life, financial responsibilities, and personal health throughout the years is undoubtedly a formidable challenge. Transitioning into retirement is a profound experience. It allows for self-analysis, relaxation, education—whether for personal growth or to share knowledge with others—and the freedom to choose whether to engage in work or not, provided one has the financial means. It's an opportunity to fill the void left by the demands of a law enforcement career in a positive and meaningful way. Upon reflection, I discovered that the essence of who I was before my career remains intact. However, the journey has sculpted a better, wiser, more knowledgeable, and humbled version of myself. Embracing this transformation has been a key element in navigating the intricate path of life beyond law enforcement. I hope for those in the same transition from LEO to retirement can find that same peace. M. Kaylani

As we celebrate this long Thanksgiving weekend – enjoying time together with our families, let’s savor these moments – knowing that the family is the essential building block of our society. I feel truly blessed. We hear a lot of bad stories every day. And one of the things I hear a lot is how many people live through nightmares with their landlords. Fortunately, that wasn’t my case. Two weeks ago, I returned the house I was living in, and to my surprise, my landlord, who is a professional, came personally and said: “I usually don’t come to these appointments. It’s usually my staff. But you were such great tenants that I wanted to come personally.” He gave me a bottle of champagne as a gift and paid back the deposit the same evening. And can I tell you something else? I have just gone through a house renovation without any hiccups. I came across a great contractor with a great team who not only delivered a service of the highest quality but also completed it on time! How many people have you heard say that? I feel truly blessed. On one hand, I feel blessed for coming across so many good people. On the other hand, I am grateful for: - Not holding grudges: I won't lie, I get mad at people, but I usually forgive them. I am simply not programmed to stay mad at people for the long term. - Being grateful even for the bad things that happen to me: It doesn’t mean I don’t get stressed or anxious, but I am grateful for the lessons learned from every experience. - Being respectful to everyone: This doesn’t mean that I live a passive life, allowing anybody to step on me. It means that while I stand up for myself and my loved ones, I also make sure not to step on anyone. And why am I grateful today? Because I don’t know why I follow these principles. I simply do. And this is yet another reason to feel truly blessed.
