Today marks the start of Charity Fraud Awareness Week. 💰 In a 2022 report prepared by BDO, it was confirmed that of those surveyed, 69% of charities experienced financial loss due to fraud. Charity funds are usually limited and any exposure to financial loss can have a significant impact on the ongoing operations and ability to support the causes they set out to. Throughout the week I'll share some tips on managing the risks of fraud in charities which you may find useful. #stopcharityfraud

Do you need to have your minimum donation that high? Generosity X has recently made close to 150 donations to charities across Canada. I'll be sharing more about "why" we did this in the coming weeks (Full transparency - it wasn't to only be charitable). But what I found most surprising was the amount of charities that had a minimum donation amounts WELL above $5. I saw as high as $50. I realize that the primary reason for this (or at least I'd assume) is fraud prevention. But there are other ways to limit fraud (address verification, limiting IP addresses, etc.) without saying to donors "Sorry - not good enough!" Creating a culture of generosity within an organization starts by making philanthropy accessible and joyful for everyone - regardless of amount.

Three steps to avoid fraud in charities: Prevent. Detect. Remediate. These steps remind us of how important it is to balance proactive safeguards while preparing for worst-case scenarios. This balance is especially important where a worst-case incident could drastically affect a charity’s solvency and ability to provide valuable services to vulnerable people. These three elements should be the backbone of any charity’s anti-fraud framework, around which management organises all other measures. BDO https://lnkd.in/eXZcUnpV

Some fraudsters may take advantage of our generosity when it comes to giving to charity. They may claim to be raising money for a fake charity or impersonate a well-known charity. Most fundraising appeals are genuine, so the risk of fraud should not put you off giving to charities. However, you should be vigilant and make sure you are giving safely to legitimate organisations. The Fundraising Regulator and Charity Commission for England and Wales advise you to pause and check before donating See these tips from Action Fraud Fraud Advisory Panel #charityfraudweek

The IRS is raising awareness about deceptive groups that pose as charitable organizations, especially during times of natural disasters and tragic events. These scammers prey on the generosity of individuals, enticing them to donate money supposedly for aiding victims. Oftentimes, these fake charities pocket the donations and harvest sensitive personal and financial information from unsuspecting donors. This information can then be used for various forms of identity fraud, including tax-related scams. Before contributing, take a moment to verify the legitimacy of the charity. Check if they are registered with the IRS as a tax-exempt organization and research their track record of providing genuine aid to those in need.
