2023. What a year.
Didn't think I could finish a year more exhausted than I was in 2022. 😫
Clearly I was wrong - and now #covid has arrived at our place for an early Christmas present! First. World. Problems.
That aside, I couldn't be happier about what's on the horizon in 2024 for the #trailblazing Par 5 #commercial program that Doug Hawkins and I have been developing at Pancare Foundation over the last couple of years.
In 2023 with the help of our friends at Solucio and Little Green Apple, we wrote a comprehensive 5-year strategy and sponsorship prospectus for the Par 5 program. We then launched these in October at the Par 5 Business Breakfast, attended by 90 connected and engaged business leaders.
To all of the business #thoughtleaders and strategic supporters who have joined us in Par 5 in the early phase - we can't thank you enough for backing us. None of this happens unless people are bold, put their hand up and take a risk in the hope to achieve something better for all of us.
Par 5 - now with serious momentum and about to land in #sydney - will become a long-term, sustainable vehicle that delivers passive income into the broadly neglected world of upper gastrointestinal (GI) #cancerresearch.
So, why is it different? Please, DO NOT think #charity.
This is a business program run by business people, who happen to work for a non-profit organisation.
👉 Exclusive national #business program that doesn't seek handouts;
👉 Designed to deliver #access and #mutualsuccess to all #members;
👉 Highly active business #marketplace that shares revenue/profits;
👉 Members will find new vetted and aligned #customers + #suppliers;
👉 Annual program of premium events for #members and their guests;
👉 #opportunities are identified, qualified, cultivated + brokered by Par 5;
👉 All this to achieve sustainable funding into #cancerresearch.
At the core of all this is our firm commitment to creating a better future for #australia's most talented - and largely neglected - early stage #cancer#researchers. By supporting them to stay in the #laboratory, only then can we genuinely provide hope for the 100,000+ #australian#families who will be devastated by an upper GI cancer between now and 2030.

Northwell Health's CEO, Michael Dowling was recently interviewed by Beckers on his leadership style and what's ahead for Northwell in 2024.
One of the questions and answers that really grabbed my attention (indeed, I'm still consumed by its implications) was as follows:
▶ Q: What's your top priority for Northwell Health for the remainder of 2023?
▶Dowling: Our strategy is to always have our business continually growing, so we have a number of plans that we want to initiate over the remainder of this year to continue to grow and expand. That's a major focus of mine over the next couple of months. Obviously, we want to make sure that we hit the metrics that we set in place for the end of this year and come out in a strong position.
Northwell is a non-profit 501(c)(3) which not only means that its purpose is to generally to improve quality of life for others at a community, local, state, national, or even global level, but that it is not dedicated to private or financial gain, and only to the advancement of public interest.
Is growth, regardless of impact on community, local, state, or national landscape, an appropriate goal of a non-profit? I find myself having an internal argument:
▶ If the non-profit truly believes that it is improving the quality of life for communities it serves, then is growth is a completely appropriate goal because this would further improve quality of life for the more communities they serve?
▶What is the non-profit's responsibility to self-police their own motives?
▶Is growth at any and all costs the responsibility of the hospital C-suite, with the charitable?
▶How do non-profits ensure that patient care is not compromised by expansion?
▶Will growth benefit the health and well-being of our community members?
▶ While growth may be an appropriate priority, how do hospitals balance their the drive for expansion with maintaining the quality and safety of our existing services? Do our growth initiatives enhance or potentially compromise our core healthcare services?"
▶Does expansion improve access to care for underserved and marginalized communities?
Comments like Mr. Dowling's and other hospital system CEOs about growth as the primary goal and metric of success are alarming and should give us all pause. If not growth, then what? Very interested to hear everyone's opinions....
Hospitals should not be profitable if we have the health care system that we want - because hospitalization is a failure of health care, not actually health care. It's a rescue effort after health care has either failed or was not used. As such, it will never be profitable in a functioning ecosystem where prevention and routine care are prioritized and rewarded well. We want the *whole* system to be profitable, but not the tertiary care piece of it. You get what you pay for. If we paid better for prevention and routine care, that service would subsidize the hospitalization. This is of course the theory behind the Kaiser Permanente model and other integrated systems, with varying degrees of purity and success. Ultimately, when employers start building their own at-cost hospitals, and providing free DPC, holistic care, nutritional education, movement opportunities and so forth, that's when we'll get there. There is already a movement afoot to this end.
Another reason why (tax-exempt) hospitals shouldn't be profitable is that success for them, as tax-exempt charities, should be defined as serving more people, or the same number of people more. In other words, any surplus funds should be put toward increasing the number of people who can be seen at the same time, or reducing the cost and cost-sharing of serving the people you already see, or BOTH. Growth for its own sake is a for-profit, taxable activity, and is inappropriate for most hospitals.
The IRS needs to crack down on this hard - it was always on my to-do list during my time in government to beef up the tax exemption / community benefit requirements for hospitals, but competing priorities edged it out. I hope future policy makers focus on this more.

How can you direct your energy to:
1) the creation of equity among people and 2) still profit and 3) be successful and 4) reach the next generation?
One of my greatest takeaways from Phylicia Rashad’s keynote at the #NBMBAA conference.
I feel that Saint Louis Black Pharmacists Association Inc. is the exact answer to that question in the pharmacy space! We don’t profit, but we do generate the necessary cash flow to provide our students and pharmacists the resources they need.
This was confirmation that we’re doing the good work. Necessary work. Meaningful and impactful work. That’s what makes this all worth it!

Let's leave DUOBBRAK TO SOME COMPANY WITHOUT HISTORY AND TRADITION?
I kindly invite you to visit the site where you can discover how to change the world of cars forever.
I share what has been achieved
- save human lives on the streets
- broaden the knowledge of automotive mechanical engineers,
(The invention is patented, researched and tested. We will be happy to help you and accept constructive criticism from you with further testing.)
Another important reason is that (given the imminent expiry of the securities that I have to sell to some shares), I hope that someone understands that this is a great industrial opportunity with great economic implications for the whole community, as described in the "new frontier" page https://lnkd.in/dhzEqerR
Don't underestimate what I write, it's urgent, a simple accountant can check everything quickly.
One of your mechanical engineers will understand DUOBBRAK in half a day, videos and manuals for practical implementation are also available.

COME SALVARE IL MONDO ATTINGENDO ALLE RISORSE E ALLE ATTIVITA' DELLE "NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS"
📚 The University of Padua organized an interesting Conference that involved Guests of great importance, including David Schizer, former Dean of the Columbia Law School and former CEO of the JDC (The Joint), who presented his book entitled "How to save the world in six (not so easy) steps".
It is not a classic book of law, full of technicalities and doctrine. It is a book open to the public, and a reference for those who approach the third sector and for those who want to deepen it.
It addresses the current problems of the third sector and indicates approaches for their resolution.
🔑 Organization and activities are keywords to better understand the vision of the book.
➡ The book revolves around the idea that non-profit organizations can improve the world, but they must be intentionally geared towards change.
David Schizer emphasizes the importance of NPOs in the United States, which affect different aspects of people’s lives, in fact, a lot of Americans educates at non-profit universities and relies on numerous non-profit organizations to organize their political, social and cultural lives.
The author identifies six key actions for the success of non-profit organizations:
- Plan;
- Persevere;
- Setting priorities;
- Change direction;
- Advertise;
- Cooperate.
➡ A key aspect is long-term planning, considering the rapid changes in society.
As for this long-term planning, "perseverance" is essential, which implies the constant search for new skills, updating and improvement.
➡ The author also notes how non-profit organizations should consider their work as measurable experiments, capable of engaging the community and collaborating with other non-profit organizations, as well as changing paths and approaches when necessary.
In this way, NPOs can succeed.
❗ Summing up and closing, Schizer argues that to succeed, non-profit organizations must embrace change, see it as an opportunity, not a threat, they must be effective and flexible in pursuing their missions with shared values, because without a sharing of the values pursued any action would be inadequate and ineffective.

In our COMM 231 class, we talked a lot about advertising and one of the topics was about specific eras of ads. I believe this post is genuinely a fantastic way to promote the fulfillment and innovations that Mercedes Benz has been through. At the same time, it demonstrates how the early era changed into the social media era of advertising. I believe that it was a crucial and intelligent matter to promote their first car; however, more importantly, it was to demonstrate how their brand supports and provides innovations through the years and a variety of generations.
Social media has brought about a paradigm shift in advertising. It's a platform that allows for more personalized and targeted campaigns, enabling brands to engage directly with their audience. This change is particularly crucial for industries like automotive, where the emotional connection with the brand plays a significant role in purchasing decisions. #comm231
