Hot take of the week: VPP’s without financing and infrastructure will fail to provide meaningful and equitable benefit to the grid. When you think about a virtual power plant, you may think of bidirectional EV charging and coordinated home batteries, but most VPP programs to date are built on smart thermostats. Thermostats are cheap, and can shift load for an hour or two, but they also see peak demand exactly when the grid is under the most stress. Greater grid benefits require more expensive infrastructure, and that investment can be prohibitive for low-income communities, threatening to leave them behind. However, designing financing programs around this infrastructure can help bridge this gap. The National Grid has announced a £7bn capital raise as it seeks to double its capital spending over the next five years. National Grid plans to invest around £60bn in networks, with over £30bn earmarked for UK infrastructure expansion and upgrades. This investment will support an additional 60,000 jobs in the UK by the end of the decade. The Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program - aimed at enhancing resiliency and flexibility of the electric grid – is the focus of a grant from the Department of Energy.

It’s so easy to be passionate about these assets. The future of long duration energy storage is bright. Here is a link to yet another story about the DOE funding announcement that the New York Times broke last week, which was huge news for our company. With each article being published the details surrounding the announcement get a bit richer, and the article we have linked to here is probably the best of the bunch thus far in terms of those details. The most important take away from this news? According to an Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC) report, the federal cost for Alpen’s retrofits will be $5.8 million. The MESC’s report says the projects will, “increase Alpen’s production tenfold, create 100 good-paying jobs through investment in automation, and significantly reduce customers’ energy use and home heating and cooling costs.”' https://lnkd.in/gu-sHR6h
