I’m excited to be attending the 2024 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Conference in Kansas City this year United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) There are few professional events more inspiring than being in the company of an organization that represents 5 million Hispanic-owned businesses, and whose members continue to initiate 3 times the number of new businesses each year than any other demographic. Collectively, Hispanic owned businesses contribute more $800 billion to the American economy every year. Of course, every great story has a “but.” In this case, the “but” is Hispanic's access to equitable healthcare and safe, authentic, and affordable medicine. According to the most recent U.S. census, 18% of Hispanic residents lack health insurance, making them the most under-insured demographic, per capita, in the country. Further complicating this already complex problem is the Mexican drug cartels’ continued efforts to manufacture, smuggle, and distribute illicit and counterfeit medicines to vulnerable and unwitting patients throughout the U.S. Thanks to the tireless work being performed by police officers and federal agents from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Los Angeles Police Department – JoinLAPD, Nevada Attorney General's Office, Arizona Attorney General's Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Drug Enforcement Administration and FDA, among others, the cartels have a battle on their hands. Additionally, thanks to programs like the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Safe.Pharmacy and PhRMA's Mat.Org, patients have options to purchase medicine safely. Let’s partner together to raise awareness about these programs and ensure that all patients have access to equitable healthcare and safe, authentic, and affordable medicine.     

Just before I left to travel to the UK VA Conference last Friday, I received the very amazing news that I was a finalist in the Professional Services category for the Norfolk Small Business Awards 2023. Holy cow!!!! 😱 But I spent the majority of my 4+ hour drive to and from Bournemouth deciding whether I wanted to share this news. The whole notion of nominating yourself for an award is really weird. I don't mean weird-weird. I mean blowing your own trumpet, is it big headed weird. You have to big yourself up and promote your business through your eyes and show how passionate you are about it. I am hugely passionate about my business and at the end of the day...if I don't, who will?! But it's still strange and the last time I done it, I felt like I'd let myself, family and friends down when I didn't win. Don't get me wrong, I understand (now) that being a runner up is still pretty amazing but I'd made this song and dance about it and then nothing. It's a very strange situation to be in and I'm not sure how much I liked it. I've heard people say its best to go for it every time and so what if you don't win, keep trying. I agree with this but I also know people keep this a secret until there's a win. I also understand this strategy. Who knows what the right or wrong way is...I just know I'm not great at publicly bigging myself up and am happy to hide in the shadows doing my own thing. But! The reason why I am sharing this? Yes, it is an absolutely amazing achievement to be a finalist, but also I will need your help in a few months as there is a public vote. So if I have any chance, I need you guys to know what's happening. It was a monumental task resulting in a job well done. Because of their efforts, there is no doubt those of us in attendance were able to accomplish the business at hand in a smooth process. 𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐇 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘: Unfortunately, we did have a Patriot and an Auxiliary member come down with COVID during the National Convention. The good news is both are doing well and are expected to recover soon. The reason we are notifying the membership, especially those that attended the National Convention, is so everyone can monitor their personal health. Should you feel you may be experiencing any flu-like symptoms, PLEASE go to your Primary Care Physician and have yourself checked. I want to thank everyone for their confidence in electing me as the National Commander for 2024-2025. It is an honor to serve you and I appreciate the trust and support you placed in me to lead this awesome Organization. With your assistance and valuable input, we will overcome all challenges and work to make changes for the betterment of the Order. On behalf of the new Leadership Team, we will ensure that there will be no gaps as we transition into the new year and we will continue to build on the many, many successes we had last year. My three main tenets for success this year are: 𝟏. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: We must have open, honest, and civil dialogs within the Order. Engage in respectful, open conversations that allow for a diversity of perspectives, fostering mutual understanding and empathy. No doubt there will be times of disagreement, but even with disagreement we can find solutions in the best interest to resolve the issue(s) at hand. 𝟐. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 As part of the Order's governance best practices, this requires disclosure of relevant information so that the leadership team can make informed decisions while the membership is kept abreast of the actions being taken in an open and clear manner. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: That the Leadership Team is answerable, liable, and responsible to the membership. The Leadership Team will strive to promote a high level of work, promote honesty, encourage dependability and garner your trust while accomplishing our goals for the coming year. Please do not hesitate to call me when you have questions, want to exchange information and good ideas, or have concerns needing to be addressed.
