Vera Rubin’s dedication and curiosity not only advanced the field of astrophysics, but also inspired countless astronomers, including myself. Her passion for unraveling the mysteries of the universe ignited my own journey into studying the rotation curves of galaxies. It’s because of her trailblazing spirit that I chose to become an astronomer.
Today marks what would be the 96th birthday of Vera C. Rubin, an American astronomer whose groundbreaking work provided compelling evidence for the existence of unseen "dark" matter in the Universe (photo 1). The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile fittingly bears her name (photo 2). This major new observatory focuses on dark matter and dark energy among its key research topics, honoring a pioneering astronomer whose observations were crucial to our understanding of these phenomena.

Retired Project Controls Manager - Programs, Tactical Solutions at Ball Aerospace
3wWhile at Ball Aerospace (now BAE) I love working with JPL on the WISE program. WISE later became Neo_Wise. Our BAE spacecraft are the best and keep working and working. My experience working with the folks at JPL was fantastic and such a team-oriented focus for us all. Fond memories for sure. I'm glad that these team arrangements keep going for the near-earth investigations. Go BAE Go JPL.
