𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 Two new species of psychoactive mushrooms in the genus Psilocybe have been described from southern Africa, bringing the list to six known species indigenous to Africa. 🍄 This is even though Psilocybe species are amongst the most well-known and well-studied species of psychoactive mushrooms in the world, with around 140 described species. In a paper published in the journal Mycologia this week, researchers from Stellenbosch University (SU) and citizen mycologists describe the two new species as Psilocybe ingeli and Psilocybe maluti. The diversity of global Lepidoptera is updated to 166,320 species, 143 families and 43 superfamilies, of which 13,124 species, 101 families and 31 superfamilies occur in India. Importantly, in this book, the authors rectified a taxonomic glitch and described a new family of Lepidoptera i.e., Heliocosmidae.

The fungal flora of coastal beach sand and plants in the immediate vicinity of marine bathing areas is an under-studied field of study, despite its potential impact on human health. This study isolates and identifies the cultivable mycobiota associated with #sandy_beaches and plants from the marine coastal systems of Gran Canary Island (Canary Archipelago, Spain), through culture-dependent and -independent methods, with particular attention to isolating #fungi that are of high clinical importance. The results highlight the important role of plants in the immediate vicinity of marine bathing areas and beach sand as a natural reservoir for human pathogenic fungi. #Shoreline_Plants 

Happy #ForamFriday, the #foramfact for the day is Did you know… Benthic foraminifera act as trophic links between phytodetritus and benthic metazoans in deep sea ecosystems. In Sagami Bay, Japan, benthic foraminifera and metazoans were collected from two deep-sea sites (750 and 1430 meters). Foraminifera at the deeper site had δ15N values ranging from 6.7 to 11.0‰, indicating they primarily feed on surface sediments or organic matter. Metazoans that may feed on foraminifera, including small polychaetes, copepods, and larger benthic organisms, showed higher δ15N values, suggesting they occupy higher trophic levels. These findings, combined with gut content observations and prior experiments, suggest that benthic foraminifera in Sagami Bay play a vital role in transferring energy from detritus and sediments to higher trophic levels.
