Stop calling your employees a family!  Families don’t let people go.  Families don’t get paid to perform.  Families don’t track performance.  And you sure as hell don’t leave your family to go join another. You are a TEAM.  Trying to achieve goals together.  One where everyone has to pull their weight.  So employers, stop the “We’re a family” BS.  Be authentic.  You’re a team. 🙂 #team #family

Everyone needs a circle of support to help them #thriveatwork. For many, one of the most important people in their circle is a family member. For me, it is my spouse Will MacLeod, MBA, CSCP, CLSSBB. Here are a few ways we've supported each other's career and continuous development over the years: 📖 Formal education - from going through our MBA program together to getting certifications, we prioritize both time and money for this. 💡 Thoughtful (and sometimes emotional) discussions on current thought leadership, events, and trends. 👂 Listening. 💪 Knowing when to push them out of their comfort zone. This type of support and accountability is not always easy or pretty while in process. We have always found it to be worth it in the end though. This fact might be the biggest realization that I have come to since starting in planning my next career. The specific jobs that you want might not be available on the right timeline. This is great insight!

One thing I have learnt in my Decade long career journey is to avoid forming a Caucus when you join a new team, or when a new member Joins your team. It kills your ability, openness and willingness to learn and grow. You end up a redundant Angry Bird, without a Feather. Therefore, I urge you, if YOU are a culprit, please change this year. Working alone is hard. For me at least. I can think of a handful of friends and colleagues who have the super power to stay heads-down alone in their work for days or weeks. But, now that I'm fully self-employed I've come to learn 1) I'm actually quite extrinsically motivated 2) I need people. Growing up I thought of myself as very self-sufficient. I took pride in it. It was an unspoken core value in my family circle — So much that it was hard to things like ask for help, celebrating in other's success, or trusting others to get things done "my way." Becoming a manager and leader helped to expose some of these issues, but working alone on something new where in uncharted personal territory is a whole new level. However... I'm super grateful for 1) I know The Lord is using this time to rewire my heart and mind as I develop new habits, skills, and reliance on Him. 2) All the friends, old and new, that have been a huge encouragement to me as I build The Rootful Company. Today, I want to thank Tim Medina for meeting up to cowork at Panera Bread. Tim, is fantastically creative and I love the way he thinks about branding and social media strategy. His LinkedIn content is always inspiring and insightful. I highly recommend following him and supporting him in his new endeavor Stump & Root co.
