“You are using LinkedIn wrong.” People tell me in my DMs. My ex-colleagues told me in chats and emails. “You share such personal things” “You talk about weird things unrelated to your field” And, because I’ve been using LinkedIn “wrong” I’ve had: 🔥Messages from recruiters about incredible roles constantly for the past 5 years; 🔥Being shortlisted for roles before they were even posted because the hiring manager knew of me; 🔥Having my top picks of job candidates whenever I am hiring because they already knew about my leadership style; 🔥Brand partnerships with companies that are aligned with my vision/purpose/mission, far beyond my wildest dreams; 🔥Opportunities that came my way and took Data With Serena™️ to 30 cities across 3 continents in < a year. ⁉️Is 2024 the year you finally push that “post” button? 👇🏼How will you invest in building your personal brand? Ps. Thank you LinkedIn for this wonderful gift. Who doesn’t love an ember mug?! #personalbranding #recruitment

Great conversation below. Lots of great feedback in the comments if you are looking for job search strategies. The question was related to job boards. The only time I ever use job boards is to generate ideas of what companies are hiring and then I go directly to the site and fill out an application. The goal is to be in the hiring company’s system. Many times I’m asked to also fill out the application for the role even when contacted for the role directly. Taking the proactive step demonstrates interest and sets you apart from others. Proactively follow up with a hiring manager or recruiter if one is available but honestly, every role I’ve had in the last 10 years has been through recruiters. Always be respectful and communicate with recruiters. They all know each other and they talk about candidates. Have the 10-15 minute conversation and tell them what you are looking for and have your resume updated and ready to share. The more honest you are with recruiters, the better they can help find a great opportunity for you. I’d rather have 15 recruiters reviewing my resume for a fit then using a random job board. My success rate with job boards leading to interviews is probably less than 10%. Best of luck in your search!

I help individuals (especially Veterans) develop the ability to make informed, self-directed career decisions, and to conduct effective job searches ... chrishogg_linkedin(at)yahoo.com
A hot topic on LinkedIn recently has to do with 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒, and whether or not job seekers should use them when applying to advertised openings. As with 99.9% of the questions asked on LinkedIn when it comes to career transitioning and job searching, the answer is, at least in my view, it depends. Here is my view on the question.
